after learning to skin a deer properly my dad showed me this trick, done this way multiple times since. a rock, pinecone or anything will work too in case you guys dont have any balls laying around! :)

I have actually found its better for tanning hides because there are no accidental slips of the knife blade.I have never had a hide come out tough or different than any others

we've used a really big bolt nut and used it on a elk before hung it from a tracktor and pulled with the truck.

if not gonna save the cape I just skin from right under antlers "IN FRONT" of ears and cut ears off close to the skull and don't need a rock or ball of any kind, no joke!

I've heard about this for years and never seen it done. Thank you for posting.

Please elaborate i would love to know how it is a "joke"... Are the authorities in slaughtering cattle a joke for doing it the same way but even faster????o wait that's when the cow is still alive sorry but yes the same ...Please feel free as i feel insulted..Let me know how people with a "true" down south upbringing do it... Please inform me sir of the true and easy way of skinning a deer as I'm obviously incapable of doing it correctly and should not and will not inform others if I the teacher in this situation am wrong.. Please sir educate me..... Timber T

The joke is what happens when you do it wrong.  My buddies tried this once, and I say once, because the skin was too tight over the shoulders that we pulled the head right off and the deer went flying into the dirt.  I never laughed so hard.  If I was to do this I think I would make sure it was skinned down past the shoulders before trying to pull it the rest of the way off.  Good luck if you wish to try.  I like the old fashioned way myself.  LOL.

I agree you do have too "precut" the deer the right way but i have ben using this method for over 10 years with great results!! As with anything when done correctly it does work better than the old knife and pull. I mean tanning wise there are no slits that stretch into holes from cutting and pulling down that's all i meant.. It does work great and my tanner even thanked us for sending them hides without flaws. just my  :twocents:

Haven't tried it myself, but CoryTDF did it last fall and said it worked like a charm...the second time.  First try the rope broke.... :chuckle:
