I own a Rem 700 Mtn Rifle in .270 and with the scope and bipod, it's right about 9.5 lbs...........and it's even labeled mtn rifle......... :dunno:

That's labeled that before you put: a scope/rings/bases/sling/bi pod/butt stock ammo sleeve+9Rd's in it. + a few in the chamber
 :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

My 700 mountain rifle, 25-06 weighs about 7.5 pounds loaded. :chuckle: Just because it is labeled mountain rifle doesn't mean it stays a mountain rifle. Throw a heavy bi-pod on it a 8.5-25 30mm vx3 and the above listed items. You now have a 10lb bench rifle :chuckle:

A great article from highbeam.com, I tend to agree 100% with this but we can all get along :brew:

The term "mountain rifle" has no set definition. Everyone has his own preference as to caliber, barrel length, finish, and type of material used. However, experienced hunters agree upon a basic set of criteria that make a rifle fit this category. First, the combination of rifle, scope with mounts, and sling should weigh eight pounds or less. Lighter is better, as long as it is achieved without compromising accuracy. Second, the rifle should be chambered for a cartridge adequate for the game pursued. Third, the rifle must be as reliable and as close to indestructible as possible.

Heck any rifle you pack into the mountains is a mountain rifle! If longrange7mm packs a 9.5lb rifle, then so be it. Maybe the more weight the better. My rifle I pack into the the mountains is 11 pounds :IBCOOL: Must be strong like bull.

Now back to the main attraction :chuckle:

I've always thought those pistol bolt actions in a rifle caliber would be nifty in the hills.... cut back a little weight on the barrel and stock, give a little on the ballistics but basically have a lighter smaller rifle.

ohhh....pretty rifle!

Yeah.. Looks pretty sweet.  Ballpark cost?

-Steve

I had the action, scope, and stock so 450.  :dunno: but if I had to buy I would budget for
scope with rings - 1200
stock- 350
action, trigger - 550 ( I normally look for guns at pawn shops then start at 100 and meet in the middle works pretty good avg. is about $350)
barrel- 1000  (good deal picked it up for 450)

then Smith charges*

With witch Gagwire's new budget it looks like a pay cut for me... I'm doubting that a new custom built off of an Enfield action I have is in the cards for this year.
