Did we not have a similar rant/post with the same results not too long ago?
Something about helping Uncle Jack and a horse comes to mind... :chuckle:

I have to agree with jeepster. Call it what it is: a "say-bow". I never could figure out where the other (wrong) pronunciation of the word came from. If you don't know the correct way of pronouncing a word, that's what dictionaries are for- look it up. I don't care if it sounds "gay." That's the way it is and you can't just change it because you don't like it! Or, if you just can't make yourself say it correctly, then do as polarbear suggests and just call it "that plastic thing".

Sabbit!  The different pronounciation could have came from our region.  You might get a funny look from a Frenchman if he hears you say these which we say our own special way:

Gervais, Touchet, Cheyenne (chien), Pend Oreille (pend d'oreille), Nez Perce, Coeur d'Alene, Des Moines, Deschutes, La Grande, Malheur.

My favorite English/French variance in our region is Bitch Creek.  It was named that because the French trappers first named it after a doe.  Their word for doe is spelled biche which sounds like beesh in English (to sound like a Frenchman, either plug your nose or say the E like you are about ready to cough).  Sounds a bit like bitch, add a little sense of humor. Thus the name.

Sheesh, I wish this was all I had to worry about.  So I'm guessing "little plastic dohickey that you put the slug into" would not be apropos?
Look man, some times you just gotta roll the dice

In French, the sound is more like sub than say.

These should sound about the same:

It sabot.
It's a bow.

I just call them "those bullets with the plastic thingy on em' ".  Sa-boh or sya-bow or whatever does sound gay so I hillbilly it up to bring back some manliness back into the conversation.  With than said, I am also a grammar snob.  Growing up with a dozen teachers in my family makes me ultra aware of mispronunciations and grammatical errors, but I tend not to correct someone unless it is my wife or kids.

Cannot agree more.

Some of the best advice young adults could be given is the advice to "let" others be wrong.

I don't think this has anything to do with "accepting people for who they are" ???

I don't think not knowing how to pronounce the word "sabot" indicates "who" someone is. It's probably just that nobody ever told them the correct way to say it. It's not exactly a word people learn to pronounce in school. I would think that most people would appreciate being told that they are saying it wrong. I know I would.
