Musket Caps?

Musket caps illegal now?

They should be legal...........they fit on the nipple and are percussion caps.  But what do they mean by "original style" ?  If they did not put the "original style" wording in there it wouldn't have been as confusing.

I'm fairly certain they were just trying to say that 209's are not legal.  But why didn't they just say that shotgun primers (209 style) are not allowed instead of wording it like they did?

  Good question. You would think that the musket cap would be thought as orignal, since they've been around since the late 1700's. I have adapted my sidelock Hawken to shoot musket caps, I wonder if that one will be illegal now?

Musket caps, percussion caps, what’s the difference?  Are musket caps any better?  I’ve had a couple of non-fires with CCI percussion caps (the red stuff had fallen out).  I’ve switched to CCI magnum caps and so far they’ve been working fine.

Musket caps I think are hotter or have more flame.  They are supposed to be a little more reliable than #11's.

The only difference between musket and percussion caps are the size. The musket caps are hotter also. I converted my Knight Predator to musket caps b/c I was having misfire problems.

It seems I remember reading musket caps have 4-5 times the amount of flash and are 400 degrees hotter than #11's. I use RWS musket caps without the flanges with no issue except I did have to reduce my load 10 grains, than with #11's. I'm sure I burn the charge more efficiently with the musket caps.

 I like the musket caps because there a little bit eaiser to handle when your hands are cold. Also like OPP said they give a hotter start to the powder charge.

Yep that's why I like 'em. Much easier to pick up and hold onto than the little ones. As far as the regulation that says "orginal style," I think it's always been worded that way and musket caps have always been legal. I'm sure they are considered to be original style, just as the #11's are.

Musket caps have been around a lot longer than #10 or #11 caps.

not sure about musket caps but i know that 209 primers are illegal

They're definitely legal.  I like them because they are bigger, so easier to put on the nipple without tools, and cured my misfire problems.

I will have to try the RWS musket caps w/out the flanges.  Maybe it will make a difference as far as the problems I've had in the past with Musket caps falling off the nipple.  I switched back to #11's because of that.  But I think I'll try those that you mention.

On a side note,  FYI I shot both Musket Caps and #11's through a chrony and with the powder load I was using  there was not a single difference in velocity.  Was using  100 grs of Pryodex. 

I can see a positive side of using musket caps.   But not if they keep falling off.
