Backyard Birds
Jim first hunted with us in 2000 and has hunted about every year since then. He usually gets at least one bird each season and sometimes 2 birds. Last fall Jim also killled a good whitetail on one of the farms. This year Jim arrived on the evening of the 29th and started hunting the morning of the 30th. I put him in a blind where I have seen birds on numerous occasions this season. Two birds were gobbling right below us and after I left he said anothe bird started gobbling just around the hill. Later in the morning he had a shot at a good long beard but didn't connect. At lunch we discussed the afternoon strategy. While we were sitting around being lazy after eating lunch my wife spotted a big tom by the garden behind the house. We instantly headed back around the house using cover to get back around him. We snuck up within 80 yards, we stopped and I started calling, the tom was slowly coming our way and I fgured it was going to happen, then suddenly the tom turned and headed away, he must have seen some movement.

The afternoon hunt was good, another gobbler was spotted but no shot taken, and lots of hens and 8 jakes were seen. Yesterday morning I put Jim in another blind and I could hear a bird gobbling on the roost as I left. A little later Jim nearly got a shot at a coyote, which is likely the reason the morning hunt was a bust, I think the coyote was after the birds and run them out of the area. In the afternoon numerous hens were spotted and Jim practiced plinking some ground squirrels with his 17 HMR. Last night at dinner we discussed the hunt for today. I told Jim to be sure and have a couple books, and some snacks, I was putting him in a blind behind the house. My wife has been watching those turkeys coming by nearly every day now, I told Jim I know it's going to be a long sit, but if you sit there the whole day you are bound to get a bird. Last night after dinner he ran to town and grabbed a few goodies for the day.

This morning after breakfast I set up a blind 80 yards from my house. I told Jim to sit tight the whole day becuase we never know when they might happen to show up, its totally random when they show up through the day. There is a group of 6 hens and 3 toms, and there is a small group with 2 toms and sometimes some single birds. I told Jim if he shoots 1 bird just sit tight because others may be close. I told him we would bring out some lunch and drinks at noon and I went back to the house. About an hour passed and Tara said the birds ought to show up pretty soon. It couldn't have been 10 minutes more and Jim shot 3 times.

I could see Jim unzipping the blind so I opened the window, as soon as Jim was out he started singing "The party is over"...  :chuckle:
He had two nice toms down, one with an 8 3/4 beard and the other was just a hair shy of 10 inches. As we cleaned the birds we laughed about all the differnet birds he has taken and methods that we have used, but this is the first time he hunted the back yard. He said his only disappointment is that he was looking forward to the lunch service at noon.   :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:

Adam's grandpa called in a nice longbeard yesterday that came right in. They saw another couple gobblers but couldn't get them in range. Today another three toms called in this morning but Adam had a misfire, so he didn't get a second bird, they had to leave for home a little while ago so Adam could be in school tomorrow. Congrats to Adam on a successful hunt.

No spring bear hunters this year?

Just 1, plus a tag myself. Will start bear hunting later in the month.
