Mt Spokane Elk hunt changes...hopefully
« on: March 01, 2011, 09:43:47 AM »
Years ago there was a reasonably robust elk herd just south of Newport in the Mt. Spokane GMU.  The season was the same as the rest of NE washington and limited to bulls with a gun and any elk with a bow.  Farmers in the south portion (20 miles south) of the unit started complaining about elk damage and the WFDW changed the season to any elk.  Since then the elk numbers in the northern half of the unit have plummetted.

What kind of support do you guys think we could get to change the season back or to develop a separate "elk zone" to address the problem animals but encourage some growth in the northern portion herds?

Thoughts?

Its healthy idea to set up a new zone but the chances would be slim to none. Not unless WDFW can find a way to squeeze a few more dollars out of it. They can't manage elk where they're well established let alone an area where the numbers are fighting to up.  :bash:

WDFW has made up their mind that we in Washington don't have the habitat for deer and elk to co-exist.  They cut areas of the state out and make the decision to have one or the other.

They're working on cutting them both out in the Selkirk and northern parts of mt. Spokane here before too long when the wolves really get established.
