Anybody sealing their primers?
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:52:14 AM »
Just wondering if this would be an important step, especially on a hunting round (in foul weather)

I never have, but that doesn't mean I'm right.  Never had any troubles to speak of.

Never have, asked the guys at Cabelas about it when first getting started and they seemed to think it was unecessary

I dont invest too much in their opinions, but have yet to have an issue

I haven't, and have had no issues in some pretty nasty weather. Although, as I push myself to higher limits, my equipment is also subject to harsher environments. I almost sealed my primers last year. I may this year. It takes only a few seconds.

I have always heard factory ammo was sealed, but i am not seeing evidence of it on the stuff I have used. At least since I started knocking the primers out of the factory ammo.
BTW I have not been sealing either.

Some factory stuff is sealed, I think Federal's Fusion ammo and some of the Winchester premium ammo.  I'll look when i get home.

My shooting ammo is not sealed...the hunting stuff is sealed neck and primer.

Many many moons ago I had a round go Pfffth instead of BOOM.  Things were a bit wet inside when i got the rifle open and things picked out of it.  Clumps of powder that didnt burn. I pulled the rest of the rounds that were in my belt carrier and my rifle and replaced with ones i could HEAR the powder shake in.  Over half of the ones in the carrier and rifle were wet inside.  This was after hunting deer and elk out of Forks in 3 weeks of straight downpour.

That is what I was wondering about.

Sealing the neck as well. Hum. wouldn't that change your ballistics some? Could you post a pic or describe. Do you apply it to the bullet during seating,or seal after?

Have wanted to, but never took the leap into it.  Guess it would be good if I ever fell into a stream or something.  Usually around here I carry muzzle down and never had any problems.

Considered it, but never did.  Never had a problem.  It never rains here in Eastern Washington.  (HAH!)
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

I do, as well as the neck. But only on hunting rounds. Never had a problem either way, I just dont want to ever hear a fizzle and not a bang.

The neck sealer doesn't effect my ballistics. I put it on, leave it for a minute and wipe off excess. Just enough to soak into and seal any possible leak points.

Probably over kill though.
