It looks like a muley. It could be a cross. Why do you ask?

Just was curious doesn't have long tines like some muleys kinda short stubby dark antlers and after seeing a few cross breeds on the site it got me wondering if it was or not. Plus alot of the muleys that are 4pt + taken out of the area and that i have seen have long spindly antlers.

Haha good question....naneum high elivation.  this buck had more of a brownish hide than grey like the typical mule deer. Obviously most would think hell no there wouldn't be blackies that far east no way but with the brownish hide and the antler structure it got me wondering. I've hunted naneum for 15 yrs and havnt came across a buck like this guy

What did the tail look like?  Sounds like Benchleg country to me...

I wouldn't be surprised if there were hybrids all the way to the Columbia. I know they're as far east as Yakima.

What did the tail look like or the ears.  Brownlike coat, blacktail tail, normal sized ears, could be a purebred, the antlers are not long tined like a muley.  There are some good blacktails out there with good racks but I don't hunt the high country blacktails.  I'd look at the tail and ears first.

I don't quite remember what the tail looked like. It was shot 4yrs ago bad memory on my part. But it had more of a brownish coat then grey like a muley. Plus the antler structure of a blacktail got me wondering. All the bucks I've seen from the area are grey. Sorry I don't have more info on the spcifics of the tail the ears were big like a muley just kinda reminds me of a couple of the muley blacktail crosses I've seen. after some research im beginning to think it is a benchleg muley blacktail cross

There are benchlegs in the Naneum and there are pure muleys.  Could be either.  You often can't tell a thing by antlers.  Genetics are freaky that way.

I'd say the tail would be the only way to tell for sure.  Even then, it's not 100%...

Hard to tell in the pick.... BT have a darker face most the time.... Too hard to say for that area.... Could be crosses one way or the other.... Most that area and Yakima are cross bred some way or another.... Just cause it has a mule deer face, ears, coat, body size ect.... Doesn't mean it's not mixed somewhere down the line.....  :twocents:  And visaversa..... My buddy shot a big 3 point that everybody swore was a full MD in Mashel... A trail and reservation mean nothing to deer....  :dunno:
