Who's doing the Monroe Lake Tye Fishing Derby This Weekend?
« on: April 28, 2011, 09:35:42 AM »
So in case some of you didnt know there is a kids / adults fishing derby at Lake Tye this Sunday.   They have planted a ton of fish in the the netted area on the southside of the like including a bunch of jumbos over ten lbs!!  Kids under 12 fishfree in the netted section from  8 am to 1pm witha bunch of prizes, then they drop the net and the adults go from 2pm to 5 pm. There is a $10 dollar entry fee for anyone over 12.  Prizes also include a $ 250 prize for biggest fish caught, and $ 500 prizes for tagged fish caught. not sure how many are tagged though. Looks like a good time with decent weather.

This event is being put on by the Sky Valley chapter of trout Unlimited along with the help of a bunch of local businesses who have chipped in to purchase 5000 dollars worth of fish for the derby.

I'll be there winning it all so if you wanna join just know i'm catching the biggest and the tagged guys.  :chuckle:

Didn't know it was going on. I'll have to look into taking my boy. Can we bring our own rod? Do we need bait? Is it a catch one and leave or does he get to yard in a few. I checked and didin't see anything obvoius with a Google search. Maybe you have a link for us?

We have done it in the past but will be turkey hunting this year.  You can bring your own gear and bait if you want. They provide all the gear needed if you dont want to bring your own but they do run low sometimes so I would recommend you bring yours. They have volunteers that will rebait the kids hooks or retie their rigs if needed, and help land and unhook the fish if needed. The netted area is kids only for the derby but they open up the nets afterwords then it is a free for all. It is a blast for the kids and is a very crowded event especially if the weather is good.  Plan on getting there pretty early if you dont want to stand in the initial line.

Have fun and catch a few for us.

Thanks for that. I've got all the gear and plenty of experience tying up after break offs. Sounds like a good chance for the boy to yard in a few. I'm in!

We went. We waited. We fished. I learned that 1/2 hour before starting is not "early". Oh well, I'm blessed with a patient boy. We waited for....oh....hour and half and he caught his few dinks in two casts and about as many minutes. We did get to watch a little fella land a 7 1/2. Big ol trough fed trout. Well run and plenty of fish. We'll do it again.

Yeah it was pretty fun. my neighbor and i won 3rd place with a 2 lb 10 oz fatty.  We both swore he was like 5 lbs lol. goes to show how bad you overestimate sizes.  The winner who was the same guy who won last year caught a 10 lb 8 oz monster.  And nobody caught any of the tagged guys. I was shocked at how well coordinated it was. I look forward to doing it next year with my daughter and the adult derby afterwards.
