A few sheds and a crazy coyote
« on: May 11, 2011, 09:01:46 PM »
Went out this past weekend with the spousal unit and found a few sheds to include a matching 5x5 pair. I was standing less than 10 ft from them and the wife noticed them before me.
Damn :bash: :bash:
Saw many deer and elk while hiking

Anyway after finding some sheds I saw a big coyote in the woods about 30 yds away looking at me. He takes off and runs away. I have two dogs with me. The wife is about 50 yds away searching in a draw. continue walking a few hundred yards and I see the coyote again and it charges into me and the dogs and starts barking and screaming at the dogs about 10 yds away and then runs off.

Our German shepard takes off after it and I hear yipping and barking. I am thinking to myself this will be a big Vet bill as I am running towards the sounds. I call the Germans shepard back and she comes back and I holding her. The coyote runs in again and starts taunting the dogs. I am trying to hold the dogs and get my .357 out of my day pack at the same time which is impossible.  My wife arrives and starts yelling at the coyote and it runs away.

I manage to get a few shots off as it is running away at 50 yds and of course I miss.

Crazy day

Sorry for the pooping deer pic :tung:.

Found this coyote scat near the encounter. I assume it is his

Next to an elk track for size comparison.

Saw 3 other coyotes that day.

Looks like I will have to back and do some calling

Nice sheds.  Good to see folks are having some success.

Them yotes are getting pretty comfortable around our place.  Several have made passes through people walking dogs, my wife inlcuded when her and our two boxers were with the neighbor lady and her two boxers.  Damn yote ran right between all of them.

The young boxers tore ass after the yote but fortunately came back when called after disappearing into the woods.  The yotes must think they can lure the dogs.

I've encouraged a couple of yotes not to come around our property and they seem to be fast learners.  I'm done shooting in front or behind them now though with an old 22, the new R15 .223 should do the job nicely if needed.

You gotta be careful with dogs and coyotes.

i am not making this up. Cutting hay several years ago I had the farms black lab running behind the mower conditioner chasing bunnies and having a swell time. A small coyote appeared about 200 yards away and the dog gave chase. I could do nothing but yell and watch in horror as that black lab ran smack dab into a whole pack of coyotes. They killed the dog before I could reach him. . .

Based up what I saw that day I truly believe they baited that dog in with the small coyote and ambushed and killed him on purposed.
