Crawfish?
« on: May 15, 2011, 08:44:05 PM »
A friend of mine is coming to visit me from the south and I would love to catch some of these guys for dinner.  Anyone know of a lake or stream around the Lakewood area to put a trap in.  Thanks.

Brian

Check the regs cause there is an actual season for them. I don't have them in front of me at the moment so I am not sure of the opening. Just thought I would throw that out there.

It opened 2 weeks ago.  There is also a min. size on the natives.  See page 134 of the regs.

Thanks NRA! I knew it was close but didn't realize that it had already passed. I guess I should get off my ass and go pick up a copy of the regs (I've always been partial to paper copies...I get a headache reading them online).

Lawdog, I have a few traps that I use just like I used to use my crab traps on the coast. I bait them with chicken, fish, etc and drop them in for the day. Usually when we are camping along the river on weekend fishing trips. I drag them in in the evening and boil up the bounty.

We also have a lot of fun as a family catching them with our hands. The kids love it and we can usually collect a good bucket's worth in a day of playing along the river.

Best bait that NAILS them is trout that has been sitting out in the sun for 4 or 5 days, nothing better!

By the way, Lake Washington is loaded with them.  If you just want to buy some, Mutual Fish in Seattle has them fresh in the summer time.

I used to melt some shortening, honey or sugar, bacon grease, some salmon eggs, together pour it in a coffee can about 2 inch deep so it sticks in the can, put a wire handle on the can and set it in under the water. pull it up after while, a couple get away but you get most. You can use some wire mesh to cover part of the opening. set up a few traps.

I've got 15 lbs for sale if you're not stuck on getting them yourself.
