anyone ever had a pet coyote?
« on: May 20, 2011, 12:53:35 PM »
I know it's not legal here and I'm not trying to do it. I was just curious if anyone on here has ever had one. There's some cool videos on youtube. I bet it would be cool since they're a dog and all. I wonder how much attention they would need and how hard it would be to raise one.

The hardest thing would be retraining a new one every time you took him out for a walk and somebody shoots it. I can see it now....."So, funny looking dog...what breed?" "Oh, Baxter here is 100% coyote." "Huh, you don't say." "Yep"

My first wife was raised by wolves (the larger Canadian breed). Does that count?

I know three people personally that have tried it. One of them has tried it numerous times. None of them were successful. I say it can't be done.

I think it is a really bad idea.  It is a canine but that has nothing to do with making them pets.  Modern dogs were domesticated over thousands of years to be the loyal safe pets they are today and still have plenty of attacks from them.  A wild animals even raised from a bottle will still be wild when grown.  If/when it turns on you it will have to be killed because it will never be able to be returned to the wild.

Even if you got a coydog cross you would be asking for trouble.  Just like MANY wolf hybrid owners have found out.

Just my opinion.

I know an experienced coyote guy that usually has one at al times.  He has recorded many vocalizations for Foxpro.  Look up Cal Taylor.  Everything I have heard him say is that it has become a pretty good family pet, but doesn't want anything to do with being in the house.

So I did search on you tube and saw some videos of pet coyotes. Here is one of a little coyote that actually is nice looking little yote. It sure is wound up! Nice coat and white belly on this thing. Its kinda weird seeing this little thing running around like a normal dog! I am going to post this video in the random you tube thread too.

My Dad had one when he was a kid back in the 50's.  He said it hated everyone but him, and it took about a year, but it eventually turned on him too.

I'd have to agree with Kain...not a good idea.

I grew up with wolf dogs and we had a coydog.....I would never promote them as a dog for most people.....we also had a monkey, and an ocelot and numerous other odd animals and my grandparents knew a lion owner...all I ever wanted growing up was my own zoo, read way too many stories about wealthy peoples menageries in far away places like India and Africa..... wild animals no matter how well handled will always be wild and must be kept and handled as such...just my opinion

Years ago my buddy had a Brittany Spaniel female that went into heat before he got around to getting her spayed, and she got out and entertained the troops.  All the half Brittany pups were good little dogs but one.  Once weaned, it would never eat with the others, and only went into the garage to eat when nobody was there.  As it got older, it would growl and snap at anyone that got near.  One day my buddy went into the garage and the pup charged him, growling and snapping.  He went back in the house and got a gun and shot it.  We figured it was half coyote, because there was lots of them around where he lived.
If it was easy, everybody would be doing it.

When Bernie Madoff did it, it's called a "Ponzi Scheme"
When Government does it, it's called "Social Security"

Looks like it could be a decent pet, If you could teach it not to jump on people.  :chuckle:

A few years back a guy on Monster Muleys (ShowMeYourRack) found a pup and kept it. He posted pics and stories about it for a few weeks. Not sure if he still has it or not, I highly doubt it.

Afriend had one he used to train his dogs on so they would chase cats not coyotes. He would put food in it;s pen and it would;nt eat until everyone was gone.

Many of my Gov. trapper friends have a coyote on site almost all year long for the collection of urine and droppings and such( Bait sites) . I have been told that they can be (somewhat) domesticated but tend to be a one person animal , and eventally turn in time .

He was busted for having it (Illegal, just like here in WA). Nothing too big, was fined and the dog was taken and put down.

When I was a kid, some of the ranchers had hybrids. I remember one particular one that was a blue-healer/yote hybrid.

That was one hyper dog. Jumped on you all the time, but was generally always happy to see you.

Don't have a clue what happened in the long run.....that alone would make the decision for me.

I just don't see the "Right" of it, to try to raise a dog, just to eventually have to put it down, usually in the prime of its life.

I could see the "hard" side of it. If I shot a female yote on my property, then found the pups, and they were very small, and told the wife, we would probably be either raising them, or taking them to a vet that handles wild animls, or the smart thing-destroying them.

I remember the one time I went to the "zoo" that was in Spokane. "Walk in the Wild". They had a pair of coyotes there....and as the wife and I were walking by the coyote pen, I could tell they weren't "wild", so I reached into the pen, and petted them.

Wife was freaked, but you tell me this, if these were wild, or even if they Imprint on ONE person, then why were these dogs so tame??? They just seamed overjoyed to have SOMEBODY give them some attention, just like pups in a pet store.

:) I know a guy in Idaho that had one, he kept it in a pen inside a building to collect the urine. I thought it was sorta cruel.

My dad always told me that he had one back in the day. said you take a piece of barbed wire stick it in a den until you feel something squishy and twist so it gets caught in their puppy fur and drag them out, as long as you get them before their eyes open you can tame them. hope an adult doesn't come home to find you doin this to their pups.
