Elk controlled hunts- Idaho
« on: May 27, 2011, 06:02:05 PM »
Just finnished with my controlled hunt application for Mule deer in Idaho and since I've already spent the money for a non-resident license I figured I may as well put in for an elk hunt too. Anyone have suggestions for a good unit?

Do you want a good chance at an ok tag?  Or a slim chance at a good tag?

If you have the money to pay a trespass fee.  I would go with 45.  If you don't have the money.  I would go with 54, 52a, or 40 late.  These units have huge bulls but can be hard to find.  Most guys would say that 66a early is the best choice but I don't know anything about it.  I also think that 70 early would be a good tag.  I've seen some huge bulls in there also.  The one thing about Idaho is there are a lot of ok units and not many good or great units.  I think a guy could pick about 10 different units and have a good hunt with a realistic chance at a 330-340 bull.  If you want bigger good luck.

Trespass fee?

Pay to hunt on private land.

Hey 3nails,

If you are having a hard time deciding theres a link to Idaho fish and game harvest page. It might help you decide you can look at success rate amd % 6pt.

Well that settles it! THEBUGLER from Idaho says unit 11 is a big let down so that must be the premier unit.  :chuckle: :chuckle:

has anyone on hear got there archery permit by showing proff that you hunted archery in our state to the Idaho fish and game. You can do this to avoid taking the couse, you need the archery permit to apply for controlled archery hunts.

You should only have to buy the archery permit if you are drawn for an archery tag.  Same with the muzzy permit.

If you know where to go in Unit 11 it can be a pretty damned good unit and closer to most of you than a lot of the other units. I've spent a fair amount of time in that unit and have seen some great bulls. You better be up on your long shots and ready to hike though.

Unit 11 is still good but not as good as it was 5 or 10 years ago. but still some good 6pt bulls come out of that unit.  320-330ish.   :twocents:
"Shoot the spike".  It's much easier to pack out!

Idaho requires you to take a course if you cant prove that you've had an archery tag in another state, the course allows you to buy the permit. I have drawn for the multi permits here in wa before, I was just wondering if that was proff enough that I've had a archery tag before?

I see what your saying now.  All you have to do is sign an affidavit that says that you have held an archery tag in another state.  I believe you can find the affidavit you need to sign on there website.  I would think that the multi season tag would be considered an archery tag.

Just a glimpse of what hunts unit 11 has to offer. I had that tag last year. :'(

Hunt 2157 Area 11-1 4 permits available
11/1/11-11/24/11   Antlered Elk   Any Weapon   11-1

Notice the dates. Look up square miles of public land and access.
It's a pretty small unit with lots of hunters compressed into it. I didnt even add the link for the mule deer hunts that are conducted at the same time as elk.  It's true, a few years back it was a quality hunt with very few tags, but now antlered and anlerless tags have exploded and too many bulls are getting shot before prime age............There are a few good bulls, just remember they call it "Hells Canyon for a reason"! :)
