Elk area 5029 Mid August, cow
« on: June 19, 2011, 09:07:39 PM »
This area south and east of Toledo has a cow hunt probably  because of complaints from farmers in the area about elk damaging their hay fields and hay left for cows.

In any case, I was drawn for this (wonderful) meat hunt and will be knocking on doors to get permission.  There are also extensive logging areas there and some State land.

What type of habitat will the cows be hanging out in during mid August?  High hills?  North slopes?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.  If you know of any doors I can knock on, please pm me.  Thank you.

Yes, the 5049 elk move around ALOT and just because you see them in one spot before your hunt doesnt mean they will be there later.  Thats been my experiance with that elk area.

tryin to get permission randomly throughout the unit. I heard it was somewhat of a tough place and really realized it  when I looked at 2010 harvest report. 0 reported kills! I have the whole month of Aug. to try to find a cow and I am really workin on gettin thing lined up right now. Doesnt look like there will be many MH's hittin it hard in Aug figuring there were only 5 tags. If anyone has a heads up on MH friendly people I am all ears.

I agree 5049 is tuff to scout, but in late july and august it will make it a little easier.
Remind me in a month and I'm pretty sure I can get you on a cow. :)
