Traditions Vortek Ultra Light Northwest Edition - Mis-Fire

Do any of you out there have this rifle? And have you had problems with the musket caps not firing? The firing pin will strike the cap but it won't always go off on the first pull, sometime it'll go off on the second, and usually by the third.

I bought this gun a few weeks ago and put a scope on it to working up loads(scope is for the range, not to hunt with) and started printing 1-2 inch groups at 100 yards. If this gun wasn't so accurate I would have given up on it! But now I just want it to work.

Any suggestions would be helpful.

Do a search on here threw the muzzleloader section there is tons of info on this gun, a lot of people have them and have had the same problems. I had one and got rid of it, it almost was the end on me! Last thing you want is to be pulling the trigger over and over again trying to get a gun to go off.

Thanks Carp, Did some background research, still on the fence on what to do. I have a call into Traditions, hopefully they can help me out. If not I might have to pick up a Knight.

If it's under 30 days from purchase you should be able to return it. Just tell them it's defective

My brother in law just got the gun and had the same problem.  This weekend we were out scouting and sighting in our guns and he put a small washer in behind the nipple...problem solved.  The gun fired everytime!  You're right, they are very accurate!

My friend had the same problem..... I think they are into making a new nipple for this gun that is just a touch longer.... Just acts like the firing pin doesn't hit it with full force....  Another friends works great with no problems firing at all.....

buddy had the same problem traditions would not do anything after it was fired. they said it was a weak firing spring and sent him a new one for him to put in himself. also be carefull wth your muzzle control break action muzzle loaders have a problem with the firing pin sticking and the gun going off when the action is closed after loading it. nothing worse than 405 grn powerbelt blowing up up in your hands.

Put another cap on and it shot fine since then.    What I don't like is that we cannot use the standard brass capper for the musket caps with wings- it doesn't fit into the opening!  Guess I'll have to look for a different capper.....?

I don't care how accurate a rifle is, I wouldn't hesitate to get rid of it.  What good is an accurate gun if it doesn't shoot consistently

On the bright side, should fix any issues you have with flinching.

Check with Traditions.
The NW Ultilight is designed for the #11 caps. They say you are not suppose to use the Musket caps.
They have the NW ultilight magnum, which is designed for musket caps.

Went back in to Bobs to find a capper that fits..... nothing. They told me to use my fingers to put it on.  Sure- I'm going to try to do that after excitedly jumping out of the truck when I see a deer, or in the snow wearing gloves of any kind, or on a follow up shot when re-loading speed needs to be 30 to 50 seconds. Not cool!

I started having the miss fire problem with my vortek and what I did to fix it was I pulled the firing pin out and went in the garage and welded the pin to get rid of the little bar that runs through the middle.I also made it about a 1/16" longer so it hits the cap harder.now it lights them off every time i pull the trigger.
