Best used 300 Magnum
« on: June 25, 2011, 10:53:21 PM »
 Hey Guys,
I am looking for a win 300 mag and have seen tons of used rifles with great prices on them at East county guns and at Cabela's. I was just looking for some opinions on stock rifles, which ones you guys think are the best for the money straight off of the rack. I plan on putting a nice leupold or nikon scope on it and hopefully it shoots well without having to mess with it to much, and
of course I want it to be on a composite stock. Any help would be great.

Thanks
Fly

I'd probably look for a Weatherby Vanguard or a Savage 110, or possibly a Remington 700.

i agree with bobcat two thirds of the way, a weatherby vanguard or savage would be a great choice.

whats your price range?

Price range is a big thing here. If you are looking for lower end price but still good, go with Remington 700. If you are looking for mid range check out Browning's. If you want high end check out sako  I am guessing you are wanting a 300 WIN Mag. You just said 300 mag and that could also be a 300 weatherby mag which is way more expensive to shoot :chuckle:

Yeah I am looking for a 300 win mag. I have a friend who has the A-bolt version and Iwas the first one to kill an elk with that particular rifle years ago. So that is one of the ones on my list. I dont want to spend Sako type money so I think it will be more in the vien of the 700 rem or Mod 70 Win. or the A-bolt. To be honest with you guys I have been very suprised to see how inexspensive bolt guns are these days, which makes me happy. Someone also told me that the newer savage 110's shoot pretty well now. Iam all ears and want all of your's opinions. also what barrel lenght should I be looking for ? 22" , 24 or 26 ????? let me know

Thanks

Would never shoot that round out of a barrel shorter than 24".  Most of the guns you are going to find out there will have it in 26" only.  One of the draw backs to Magnums.

Over the counter guns would include Christiansen and Rem. Scendero my two favorites for Mag guns.  But sounds like those are a bit more expensive than you are looking for.

Not all Sakos are expensive.  They might surprise you how affordable they are.  Check out pricing from Sportsman's/Outdoor Outfitters.  I do like the 60 degree bolt on them.  And most have a pretty good hunting trigger.

Bang for the buck though I would have to lean toward the Rem 700.  A lot of stock and barrel choices in the 300 Win Mag and perhaps the best stock trigger.  Every gunsmith on earth can work on them too which is a plus if you want to play with it more later on.

Good luck finding that perfect gun for you.  Just make sure you like it.  In the end that's what really matters.

As much as I hate to type this...don't forget Tikka.  I have a T-3 lite and it's an amazing rifle right out of the box.

Love that!!!

All I remember is the old Tikka 100 shot shotguns coming in for gunsmith repair.  So I can not comment on their new stuff at all.  A lot of guys on H-W that sure seem to like them.

Howa 1500 with Hogue stock.  Howa manufactures the Vanguard for Weatherby but the 1500 comes with a three-position safety while the Vanguard does not.

the wife has a 300 win mag savage 110. Leupold III  3x9. has taken down everything from deer to moose. She has a muzzlebreak on hers so it don't slam her into the dirt she is only a buck thirty. But as for shooting. She wanted to go on a sheep hunt in Alaska. I said sure but you got to show me you can shoot first. I set a target up at 300 yards she put 4 rounds into the heart area about the size of a tennis ball and one was pulled about an inch high right into the lungs. Savage shoots straight.
