Youth Shotgun

Well my son now wants to start duck hunting. I'm now in the market for another gun for him. Any help in picking out his first shotgun would be greatly appreciated!!!!

How old is he?  Can he handle a 12 guage or are you looking for something smaller?  An Remington 870 is always a good reliable choice.

Remington 870 express youth model 20g shoots 2 3/4" and 3" killed quite a few ducks, pheasants and a few geese when I was younger.

Probably a 20 Ga. I should have put that in the post He will be 11 tomorrow and is 5'5" and 115 lbs

Remington 870 youth. It should be about the right size, I think the synthetic version has spacers for the stock http://www.remington.com/products/firearms/compact/shotguns/model-870/model-870-express-compact-camo.aspx

I have the wood stock version although I'm not a youth any more. And I like the gun alot.

Try to take him to the local gun range and see if they will let him try out a few guns. If not get a few of your buddy's together for a shot gun testing day. My daughter age 12 (plus one week  ) was about the height of your son but a bit lighter when she decided she  liked shooting shot guns . I bought her an 870 youth model 20 which she really liked until she got the nerve to shoot my model 1187 in 12. She will not shoot the 20 now unless I make her because it feels too short and kicks more than my 12 does. My son now age 9, 53 inches tall and 54 lbs. during turkey season (age 8 this year and 7 last) would much rather shoot the 1187 12 in 3' then the 20 in 3' any day. I would say you will have to see how your son handles the bigger gun as turkeys with a bi pod is no where hear flying ducks but maybe a youth semi-auto (with the reduced recoil) would be worth looking at.

At 5'5", go with the 12 gauge.  I was a small middle schooler but was able to shoot the 12 when I was 12.  Hard to beat the Rem 870 but I would not rule out a lighter semi-auto either.

Wow, so much advice. We have tried several different guns on range day. He just has not found the gun he completly likes yet. I figured I would pick him one up for his birthday. He has shot the 870 and liked it. He has also shot several of my 12's with lighter loads. They just seem a little long for him. With this being said you can't call me a waterfowl or upland bird guy. I have never really had a urge to get into duck hunting. I think he maybe the one to make me take it up. Dang kids now im gonna have to get a new gun.

not a bad little shotgun, only draw back really is it's so leightweight it can have a pretty sharp little kick

thinking about drillin out the stock and loading something in there to help take the edge off.

my 12 yr old shoots a charles daly, got it when he was 9 or so.

not a bad little shotgun, only draw back really is it's so leightweight it can have a pretty sharp little kick

thinking about drillin out the stock and loading something in there to help take the edge off for when my next oldest starts using it

I started with a mossberg and it was a great gun. The 870 are great to! I am now running a bps and its a killer gun!
