My suggestion: go take a walk, drive or hike through the unit and buy some good maps.  You will be fine. I have very limited time myself but if I was drawn for an unit I have never been in then I would be making scouting a priority.

Do a search and you'll find additional info and break out the leather.

Great tag for Archery!  You're not going to find many bulls over 300, but people forget this is a wetside Washington unit.  Those are hard to find in any unit over here.  During either the early or the late season you will find elk almost everywhere you go in the Toutle unit.  It's full of elk.  Clearcuts in early season & timber or Christmas trees in late season.  Four or five days on your boots in late August and you'll know where a few good bulls are.  Doesn't really matter where you go in or north vs south.  Just put in the miles and your sure to find 'em.

Congratulations!  And good luck to you.  You're going to have some fun!!!
He asked, Do you ever give a short simple answer?  I replied, "Nope."

Never mind these jerks, everybody is jealous they don't have a tag.  And anybody that asks for help, without very much introduction.... gets the cold shoulder.   You should start with a map, and the weyerhauser st. helens tree farm map is a good start.  Much of the land is behind gate during the early season, but there is some state land to be had. You can get a start from Toutle of Hwy 504, and some southern access from the woodland side.  Good luck, I had the tag twice.  We had a blast!

Ghost... Nice to see you on here again.  I hope your family is doing well.  I picked up a cart for my mountain bike and I am dangerous now...  I do not think twice as killing something miles behind a gate.

Ghost is right...  Do some searching on this site and do some camping down there this weekend to figure it out.  I will be a fun hunt.  I had the tag once...

There's a lot of nice bulls in Toutle. A friend of mine also drew for this year. From the north or south side, you should be able to locate shooter animals fairly quickly, but you have to scout on your own. I Cougar in the south, start on the 80 Rd and just start taking logging rds to the left.

Spend the money and buy two maps, one from Weyerheauser and the other at the Department of natural resorces for the Mt. ST. Helens tree farm. DNR map shows all public land and the other shows all roads and numbers.... locate the area and get familiar with it. Then take a look at Google Earth so you have an Idea of the way it lays out...... Gates will likely be shut so the North end of the unit and the souther 80 line (national forest) will be the open lands (south you will have to bike in cause the Toutle lays to the West) You can drive the north end and it will be crowded with scouters and hunters alike! Alder Creek in the north holds a few nice bulls,,,,,hope this helps, good luck! Remember to watch your boundrys......
Elk 23 for 30 but whos counting!
My son out did me his first year out at 13! 5x5 missed the book by 1 1/8" and Yeh I am proud of him!
I'm ready for tall timber and deep canyons, are you?
