Buying a deer tag? Help!
« on: July 16, 2011, 07:20:12 PM »
Hi everyone, I had a question and wondered if anyone had an answer. I haven't decided if I am going to do modern or archery and wondered if there was a way to buy a deer tag and try hunting archery and if I had no luck, that I could also hunt modern. Can I buy one tag that would
allow me to hunt both ways for one deer? Or do I have to buy two tags and only get one deer or do I just have to pick between archery or modern? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Sorry but no.  You get one shot at it.  One tag only, archery or modern.  Choose wisely

The only way to do what you are wanting to do is to buy a modern firearm deer tag.  You can hunt the MODERN FIREARM DEER SEASON DATES with a bow and if you aren't successful or don't like it you can pick up your gun and continue to hunt the MODERN FIREARM DEER SEASON DATES.  Read the Hunting Method rules on the right side of pag 17 of the regs.  Then read them again to make sure you know what it means.  Then if you decide to try this, remember that you can only hunt the season dates on page 17.  DO NOT hunt the dates on page 17 with a rifle.

Oh yeah, remember to wear your hunter orange whether you are carrying a bow or a gun during those seasons.

This is correct. But read it closely just like all the regs...

The last reference to page 17 should have been page 18.

Not sure what a hunter education class has to do with the question?
I am sure that my answer is correct.

I think he was getting at the fact that this is covered in hunters ed and that the OP should not be buying a license before he learns this in a hunters ed class

I thought that mighe be what he meant.  However, there are a lot of "hunters" out there that don't know a lot of important regulations and least the OP asked the question before findning out the hard way.  I have heard a lot of people think they can buy an archery tag and hunt the archery seasons and if they aren't successful hunt the modern firearm season with a rifle because of some mystical "lesser weapon" claim whereby they bought a tag for a lesser weapon (archery) so they can hunt all the seasons.   :bdid:
