bivy elk hunting and bear issues?
« on: July 26, 2011, 11:04:10 AM »
Has anyone ever had problems with bears trying to get into your food while bivy hunting? I know you are suppose to protect your food while in the back country but if I am bivy hunting I really dont want to take time to hoist my food into the trees. The area I am hunting this year has a huge black bear population and am concerned that they might try to snuggle into my tent with me looking for my food. Any thoughts?

Which is more hassle, hanging food or running off bears?  I know my choice.

I see your point, another factor is that half the area has no trees tall enough to hang anything in.......

If you're a real man, you'll store your fresh meat in your sleeping bag overnight!  :yike: I'd hoist it.

Interested to know what kind of food you pack when you Bivy.

I generally worry more about mice than I do bears.

:yeah: i have never been worried about hanging my food, just keep it clean and sealed up, has anyone ever had a bear come into camp and get at thier food? I could see it in a park where  bears are less likely to be scared of humans but not so much in areas where bears are more human savy due being shot at.

only thing that Ive had get into my food was chipmunks and mice, i too don't think you need to worry about a bear getting into your food. by all means if ya sleep better at night by hanging your food go for it but its not necessary  :twocents:

I've never had a problem with it in the past, but usually I have tree's around camp. If your at all worried you can stash it a 100 yards downwind from camp. I also makes sure I keep stuff sealed up at leave no food or trash around. I think that's the biggest thing.

i usually live off of power bars, jerky granola dried fruit and mt house meals for dinner. I typically just keep all my food in my pack outside my tent. but the area i am hunting this year is loaded with bear like i have never seen. I've never had problems with any animals before but this years hunt is going to be diffrent from the timber comapny land i usually hunt. I really dont want to deal with trying to hang my food espesially (sp?) since above about 3000ft the trees are only about 15 -20 foot and widley spaced. I wont be having a set campsite. I will be camping where ever darkness finds me.

I have never had a problem and have never hung my food.  Black bears aren't very brave.
