Can't wait to shoot new Bighorn!
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:27:46 PM »
I bought the Knight Bighorn yesterday! I can't wait to "see some smoke" and let some lead fly!or (sabots)! What a awesome looking gun in camo! I have already read a lot about what to shoot. But, will take more info on what to shoot again, especially from other Bighorn shooters. What do you use for elk???  This is my first ML, my 16 y/o son also got one. We will be going elk hunting with ML's for first time. I have always been a modern shooter.
I will keep my guns, money and freedom. You can keep the change!

congrats on your new purchase.  I got the disc extreme a little over a month ago and love it.  I am shooting 777 3f 100 grains and using barns tmz's 290 grain.  I am shooting a 3 inch group at 100 yards.  Enjoy your new rifles.  I think you will really have a good time doing muzzy.

Thanks for your info! you and many others suggest Barnes 290 with 777 with 90-100 grains. I'll ask though, and I'm sure I will get blasted with a lot of yes's, but, is 290 big enough for elk?  I was told by someone. Not from this site. That I needed something heavier for elk, 350-400?

the 290 barnes work good for elk. you should not have any problems. shot placement helps. the barnes petal out when they hit. they are great bullet. they can be hard to load if you go with the tmz's. they are alot of guys on here that shoot them. the precision rifle dead centers work good to. good luck with your new toy they are fun to shoot. i use a 100 grains of triple seven. good luck this season. my son has a wolverine thumbhole in stainless same gun as the bighorn just different name im sure your boy will enjoy shooting and hunting with it.

I shoot the older Bighorn with 100 grains of Triple-7 and the 348 grain Powerbelt hollow-point.  Works great on both elk and deer- and I have not noticed excessive meat damage, even on deer.

plenty big enough for elk.  I hit them with the 290's they don't go to far.

I shot my new Bighorn with 100 grains of Pyrodex and the 348 grain Aero-tip Powerbelts.  I was pretty much putting the bullets in the same hole over and over again at 60 yards.  When I moved it to 100 yards the group got a bit bigger, but thats mostly due to the guy holding the gun.  It's definitely a good load combination.

290 barnes and 120 grains of 777 powder seems to be the best combo for my big horn.  I know a lot of guys will say you dont need to season a ML bore but my bighorn shoots a lot better now with several hundered rounds through it than it did new.
