Pasayten Bears
« on: August 06, 2011, 09:03:27 AM »
Is the Pasayten any good for bear hunting the third week in August. I'm going to Remmel for the weekend, and didn't know if I should bring a rifle along.

I would say on most years it's pretty good around 3rd week of August but it might take until mid-September this year before it gets real good.  The west side tends to be better than the east in my experience.  More berries for the bears to eat.  Not that you can't find the bear or berries farther east, I just think there is a higher concentration closer to Ross Lake.  Keep your eyes open for grizz, and don't shoot one if you want the Pasayten to stay open for bear hunting!

Well I didn't end up seeing any big bears, rode right up on a couple of smaller ones eating berries along the trail, but no shooters. It was a good trip though, we got to see some goats, moose, bear, and some really nice deer.

What trail head did you go in on??   We were up that way trying for Meadow but no go with the trail heading in there.

We went up Andrews Creek. The bears were about six miles in at the edge of the burn.

I think the eastside is pretty good right now, the berries are ripe and the bears are in them.

Yes, biggest hassle is getting them out of there before spoilage.  Are you willing to cut your trip SHORT.

That is what made my decision for me last year on a big one. (biggest I've ever had the chance at/ever seen) I wasn't willing to cut my trip short.

I should have!!! :bash:

So I shot this buck up in the rocks one year, and he tumbled about 1,000 feet down to me.   By the time I found the piece of antler he broke off and got him situated where I could cut him up, I heard this commotion below me.  It sounded like Idabooner was coming with the mules.  Logs were being smucked, trees knocked over, really the only thing missing was swearing.  Well he doesn't do that much, thats my job with the mules.   I quartered up the buck and got him ready.  I yelled a coupel times, the commotion would stop, so I figured he stopped to listen, then it would continue.   Then he went on by..........what the heck. I   Finally finished what I needed to do so headed back to camp, where I found Idabooner kicked back enjoying the Summer (Fall) day.   It had been a bear. LOL   and.....the bear mosied all the way by our camp.  If I had taken 5 minutes to investigate I guess I could have burned two tags.  Might have been a bit more of a challenge to pack out though.

Good point, I don't like cutting a trip short. If the bear was big enough I'd go home early, otherwise I would only shoot one on the way home, or the night before.
