Wouldn't an over spined arrow just cause loss fps and gain k.e? I heard under spined arrows can nearly be the same as dry firing

No.  An over spined arrow will still have tuning issues.  You might try a 125 gr head, but even then I'm not sure you make legal weight for WA., so you have another issue there.

A heavy arrow will cause a loss of speed and increase KE, but we are talking about the mass weight of the arrow not the spine weight.

I have to ask why your arrow is 1 and 1/2 inches shorter than your draw length?  If that is not a mis- print, because if those numbers where reversed it would be better.

I don't know where you are located, but Sportsman's Warehouse in Puyallup is having a soft opening this Friday.  Come in and see Ryan, and he will check it out for you.
Hunt hard and shoot straight!

Well I measured my dl to the deepest part of my grip plus 1.75in. Shooting broadheads and  field tips and they both group good out to 60 yards together. As far as the legality issue, I talked to a game officer and he said normally they don't carry a scale with them. I know that gives me no right to break the law but in order to keep legal I would have to shoot almost a 30in arrow with a 125 broadhead.

yah i was gonna say your way under weight! i have a 340 spine 28.25 inch arrow 9.3 gpi and with a 100 grain broadhead at 71 pounds i am under weight by a few grains. according to "tap"  my arrow is under spined but tuned fine. i can get it closer to correct spine by dropping down to a 75 grain bh, or taking my bow down to 65 pounds, or go to a 300 spine arrow. but according to the easton chart im fine.

easton chart says you can get away with a 500 spine, but if you went with tap i would bet it would say go with a 400 spine. but with both of these you would be under weight.

to make weight with your arrow being so short you would have to run the heaviest aluminum arrow easton makes with a 125 grain bh lol. that would be an aluminum 12.3 grain per inch arrow with a 125 grain bh equaling 435 grains and wa limit would be 432 grains at 72 pounds. you add weight for inserts, knock, and fletching and you might get away with a 100 grain bh.
they call me the bloodhound cause i can track a wounded animal in the rain for 2 days when all it has is a splinter.. sniff sniff awooo

Well my main concern is wrecking my bow. How hard am I being on my bow, should I drip poundage to 65 to make it a little better? Or am i ok

What year and make of bow?  Aggressiveness of Cams also plays a role in determining appropriate spine.

you should be fine if anything your over spined and it will just slow your bow down. as long as its tuning i wouldnt be too concerned. if its not tuning you might look at a less spined arrow.

A 125 grain head would make you close on the spine if you had a 28 inch arrow.  That would give you extra weight, improved FOC.  Performance should be better.

Ahhhh!  Another short draw archer screwed by Washington's wonderful archery requirements.  Though it is much better than it was when 400 grain minimum was the rule.  Women really took it in the shorts back then!!!  I travel all over the states and Canada and I have to change bows and arrows to hunt my home state even though I am shooting bigger badder animals elsewhere.  But, rules are rules and we try to make the best with the cards we are dealt.  I've dropped to shooting 62# in this state to make it easier. Though my power stroke is a bit longer than yours.

You are at about 5.4 grains per inch. Martins are more than capable of handling that.  Even more so when you figure how short your power stroke is.  I wouldn't worry about hurting your bow at all.

Stiff arrows are great if you can get them to fly well.  If you are grouping field points and broadheads out to 60 yards I'd say they are flying pretty good for you.  It's suprising with that stiff an arrow, but good flight is good flight - don't over analyze it.  Enjoy it!  Stiffer arrows weight-to-weight will penetrate better so sounds like you're good to go from a performance point of view.

To hit weight for Washington state without shooting an arrow 10" too long there are options.  In the 400 spine range you could go Carbon Express Pile Drivers, Beman Classic (cool cedar arrow look) or Easton Full Metal Jacket.  If you stay with the 340 I think you could get the Carbon Extreme KV Hunter (Super Nice!!!)to make it.  All are going to be a good bit more expensive than the Excel shafts.  CE Pile Driver will probably be your most reasonably priced of the lot.  I've shot them all and they are all a good bit more consistant than I found with the Excel shafts.  Wouldn't hurt to give a half dozen a try if you are concerned about staying legal.  For me it's a risk I just can not take.  Only you can make that decision.

Good luck and good hunting!

Punched the Pile Driver numbers into Archers Advantage to double check.  If you go 250 (400) spine you will need the camo version to hit weight at 70# or drop to 67#.  If you go 350's you don't need to get the camo or drop poundage to hit weight.

If you have any troubles getting them PM me and we'll get you taken care of.  Good Luck!
