The yote that got away...
« on: June 23, 2008, 10:29:41 AM »
So Friday night i went to my dads and decided to call for alittle bit...just to see what I see. I didnt have any luck at first, so I change locations, only by a few hundred yards. I climb to the top of this 12 ft high old burned out cedar stump I used to climb as a kid (not so young anymore) and sat down. I had a decent view of a tree line surrounded by a tree farm to my left/straight ahead. Behind me was my dads shop and brush that blocked my view, and a large cedar tree to my right that blocked some of my view...but what the heck.

Wind was still. I sit down (and when I say sit, I mean gingerly...the stump is burned out alot on the middle, so there is not much room to sit comfortably) and blow a quick burst with a screamin rabbit and then give a few howls.

No more than say 3 minutes, do I see a yote bouncing up through the tall grass at about 35 yards. I blow kisses and he stops...walks up a slight incline (which is great cause now I can see his head) and stays put. I raise the gun and aim for the face...and get ready to pull the trigger...he is getting a little ansy so I blow a kiss or two which holds him up...pull the trigger...

NO...safety was on! Stupid stump climb~!

I move to pull the safety off and he retreats out of sight into the trees...just enough to where I cant see him...doesnt return after I blow on a few calls...

Sigh...so, no shot, but I was excited to call one in. Sorry..no pics either...

I have done that.  I have also tried to shoot a coyote without a round in the chamber.  That is my personal favorite.  It goes something like this.

1) Pull the trigger.
2) Pull the trigger harder
3) Look down at my rifle in disbelief and start to curse the malfunctioning piece of crap.
4) Lightbulb goes on, I chamber a round, coyote is running for the hills, and hunting partner is giving me the WTF look.
5) Change my mind about the rifle, so I like it again, get a serious look and ask my partner, "Why didn't you shoot, I was waiting for you?"

Dreams are forever on the mind, realization in the hands.

nice.
"Right now, I am thinking that If my grandmother was here, she would be lecturing me about how there are poor people in Africa, that would just love to have a Ruger, I would just say "Great, granny, lets just ship all the Rugers to Africa!"

Loving life in the Great Northwest one day at a time.

It sounds like it's time to get a new gun.
