Remote field dressing question:
« on: September 13, 2011, 07:09:38 AM »
Okay, so I am headed for High buck country this weekend.  First Time.  Only been hunting a few yrs, got a deer last year and a bear the year before.  I am not sure in the rare event I do get into a buck what to do with him in the high country.  Every kill of mine has been within a mile of the truck.  Looking for the old timers opinions!  Thanks

Cliff

Step one: Shoot deer
Step two: Gut deer
Step three: Debone deer
Step four: Pack meat, hide, head out
Step five: Enjoy tasty meals with good memories

Take the hide off one side, quarter and/or de-bone and place in game bags.  Cut out the backstraps and remove the neck/rib meat and place it in game bags.  Flip the deer over and repeat.  Cut the head off where it connects to the neck and pack it out.  Leave the cape/hide there unless you plan on having it mounted or giving it away to a taxidermist.

H20 has it right; however there area a few changes i would make, 1) No need to gut the animal, go on youtube and watch a video on how to bone a deer without gutting, pay special attention to the tenderloin segment of this video.  2) carry a sheet to layout so you have a nice clean area to bone the meat. This is a must. 3) If its a deer your not going to mount, skin the head and remove as much meat, and remove the head right at the base of the neck. Or just cut the antlers off the skull, this is legal, all you need is proof of sex. This will cut down on the weight you are packing out by up to 10 pounds. Euro mounts are still very cool.  And be able to carry a hefty pack because you want to have the whole animal out in one trip.  It will take a couple animals to get the hang of a debone without gutting but once you get it you will never do it any other way unless you can see your truck from were the animal is laying. Good luck!

Instead of carrying a sheet you can just use the inside of the hide that you just removed.

if you don't already have a packboard look at the kelty. good price and great pack. a good pack board does make a difference believe me. The time it takes to do a quick quartering is much better then dragging your game. best of luck

I agree with huntdog but I would suggest gutting animal so you can have the real experience of getting your hands bloody and eat the liver!  As a side note I usually use latex gloves, not manly but smart.

:yeah: X2 but I keep the hide. It is great for making stuff out of like gloves, hats and vests...ect. The hide is too great of a resource to waste. The tanning process is not that hard at all.

Here are a couple pics I snapped on the way to being boned. I Hung a game bag and kept my pieces as big as possible to avoid waste.
