walking in locked gates
« on: September 17, 2011, 09:06:45 PM »
time to vent.............well me and my huntin partner decided to walk in a gated off area...we got in back about a mile and what do we hear...a damn truck coming in from the other direction...the idiot just drives by real slow with a smile on his face...i felt like puttin a arrow in his tire...i put in the time and effort to try and find an elk and this happens...why do some *censored* people have to ruin it by going around the gates  :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash: :bash:

That is true about the disabled hunter.  My brother has no right leg and he gets one.

your profile says aberdeen

there is some weyerhauser ground over there where there is a locked gate on one end and on the other end there is no gate...I made that mistake as well thought I found a good walk in then had trucks go by so grabbed the map and explored all the other points of entry and discovered why people were just driving in.  And on some green diamond land there were people with keys who could drive in on the few gates that didnt get thrown open during deer.

perhaps it was a disable hunter? which could recieve a key from the state to be in there.
this is another option

Pe Ell? Well then, it was probably a Weyerhaeuser employee. Apparently in that area the Weyerhaeuser employees are allowed to drive in and hunt behind the gates.

Rude responses in this thread.  I will drive up on all of you behind a gate and I sure bet your not greeting me with a smile and a smoke.

Does not even have to be a gate that I am behind and it is disappointing when a truck comes up a road I have spent good time on.  I hear your rant...

Opening day, 2 and 1/2 miles behind a gate, truckload of (Spanish speakers) with spray-packs on their backs.
This Friday at the same gate, a truck and refuel vehicle (larger truck) going in a few miles to meet a helicopter, and fill/fuel/pick up pilot.

Just part of hunting on private timber company lands.  It is a privilege most of them allow hunting, it is private property. Most of them actively manage their lands, so you will run into forest workers or timber company employees going about their duties.  I have just gotten used to the fact that no matter how far back in I am somebody may show up in a vehicle.  It sucks to put all that work into getting way back in and a vehicle shows up but what can you do.  Most of the time it is just somebody doing their job.  If it is somebody that drove around a gate try and get a pic. as was earlier posted, most security folks for the timber companies are more than happy for the info and will act on it.

Is this surprising to anyone... it's private timber company land. Opening day or not, they have land and road maintenance to do. They're running a business, and hopefully a for profit business. Consider it a privilege that they even let you walk on the land in the first place. Have you ever looked into public access in say a state like Texas?

How about this one, we were up in 336 this past week, on Saturday they had some sort of 25K/50K relay run right through the unit on the ORV trail.  Not to mention the contstant drove of motorcycle enthusiast enjoying the weekend.  Found it real funny though, me and my hunting buddy driving down through the unit all camo'd up passing runners on teh road.  I am sure they didnt like the dust we were kicking up but its a shared resource.  Seems to me the relay planning committee didnt take in affect that it still Archery Hunting season.

The area I hunt has 3 main access points, one of which has a gate that is often closed. Maybe this is the same case? Instead of being mad at the other person, I would be mad at myself that I don't know the area well enough to do the same.

I had no problem with the workers, and enjoy the fact that the whole unit is walk in hunting only.
I just wish that there was browse growing in the few clearings, but they spray with defoliant.
and have not even seen any new planting to be re-prod.  :dunno:

Generally, newly logged areas are sprayed before planting in order to control vegetation that would compete with the seedlings that will be planted on the site, commonly called a site preparation treatment.  Seedlings will then be planted in those areas the next spring. Sometimes I have seen a follow up herbicide treatment a year or two after planting but by year 3 or so the seedlings can generally out compete the grasses and forbs that reestablish.  There occasionally is the rare exception when a later follow up treatment may be needed if there is a problem with the seedlings i.e. they get heavily browsed.  Beyond that most companies are finished with the broadcast herbicide treatments.

I apologize for changing the subject from the original post on gates.

I hear ya. It has happened to most of us.

I drug a game cart/solo camp into the Marble one year for elk. Straight up hill the entire way and I am no athlete...  Kicked my azz. About five hundred yards from the spur I was going to camp on....a truck came up from behind me. Land management guys checking that no trucks were in behind gates before the opener....  They gave me a 500 yard lift  :bash:  to my road. Guess I should have waited to hike in a few hours cause they would have given me a ride up the entire way...   :chuckle:
