Calling elk oct1-7

I have a bull tag for the Margaret and I'm wondering are the elk still callable? What calls will work best for the first week of October bugling and cow calling just cow calling? Don't have much experience calling elk I've always hunted them in November I've been down scouting several times and have afewareas picked out with some bulls in them. Any tips would be much appreciated!

Well, I dont hunt the Margaret area but the elk in general should still be fired up. I would say you would have good luck with locator bugles and cow calls during your hunt. I hunt the archery season but the bulls seem to really get going right at the end of Sept.

After you locate a bull with a bugle don't bugle anymore, when you get in closer use the cow call. I've found that bulls this late in the rut would rather take their cows and go then stay and fight.  And remember, elk have a very keen sense of where your calls are comming from. When he's close he may come in quite and probably be looking with in 10 feet of where you were calling from. Pay close attention to the wind as always.  Good luck

That's what I wanted to hear! Nice I can't wait for Friday. Been waiting for this hunt since found out I was drawn! Im going to have a hard time not shooting the first bull I see I've never shot at a bull elk in lots of years of spike hunting!

There will be cows coming into their second cycle of estres if they did not get bred the first time around. So the first half of October is always a very good time to hunt!

 :tup:CONGRATS on drawing that tag I have been putting in for that one for about 10 years.  The issue a lot of hunters have with that area is the lack of cover.  Hunters tend to enter in from the Winston side of the area and work up into the Margaret and that ends up pushing them into the Loo-wit unit.  If I had that tag I would start off the FR-26, hike in about a mile or two and work down to the Winston.  You'll have a better visual vantage point and less chance of them heading back into no-mans land (Loo-wit).  There are a lot of BIG Bulls in there. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!!!

Have you seen the thread from Titan outdoors about looking for someone with a muzzleloader margaret tag? Those guys are a good group of people and experienced elk callers. Plus they will film your hunt for you.

Congrats, you drew a hell of a tag. Don't give up or get frustrated. There are A LOT of mature bulls in there.

you dont need to call at all in the margauret just make your shot count.
