BBD
« on: September 27, 2011, 08:54:56 AM »
Well after one crazy busy year I finally found time to elk hunt.   We set out and I was the caller until my buddy got his bull then it was my turn.   He had an idea where the elk were and we set off in that direction.  Got up on a flat and let a bugle go.  Immediately two bulls rip from on top of the flat.   Worked our way close and got into position.   The elk were screaming back and forth and I could see cows and a couple spikes and then a smaller branch bull.   I started raking a tree and let out a few cow calls hoping to get one of the bulls to come in.   Right away the elk go NUTS.   They just wouldnt commit to coming so we moved closer.   While I was gathering my stuff my buddy saw the herd bull and said he was a monster.   I was kind of bummed out that I didnt get a glimps at him yet but oh well.    We were now in position and I let out a few more cow calls.   Off our right side the 4x5 bull comes running right in,  one perfect shot from my buddy and the bull tears up the hill towards the rest of the elk.   Cows go running everywhere and I can see the tops of the herd bull coming right at me.  He thinks the small bull is after his cows and has no idea of what just happened.   I drop down and get ready.  He is paralleling us right on the other side of a small ridge and is about 45-50 yards.  I could see 4 point above but no hair what so ever....I move up and there he is staring right thru me.  I stop and he starts walking again slightly towards me but heading for the timber.   No time for a range I settle my 40 yard pin and cow call at him....THHHWWAAACCCKKKK.....   I just stuck a bull I have dreamed about for years in an over the counter unit.    Ill write some more when I get time....Gotta get to class

:yike: It's nice to see that if you are willing to put in the work, you can take a bull as large or larger than those who have permits  :chuckle:

Great job!
