My hunt with my Daughter
« on: October 05, 2011, 01:01:16 PM »
I got Madison out of bed at 0245 in the morning and we were on the road shortly thereafter.   We arrived on site right at daylight.  Too early for pics yet, but we started down the road.   It wasn't long and we spotted a cow and a calf feeding down in a moosey bottom.  We got out and approaced a little bit for better veiwing.  It was a "youngin" so I didn't push it.   While we stood and watched, I heard a putttt puttttt.  I looked up and there were a dozen turkeys in the tree above us.   They flew out one at a time over our heads.   That was cool.

We pulled into a place and I started walking up the road to make a call.  I heard a grunt up on the ridge so went back to the truck to reposition.  I moved down the road pulled off and Madison and I got out and moved out.  I bellowed out a cow call and a different bull answered me.   I spotted him.  He was a long ways out.  It was fun being able to see him as I talked him in.  He hesitated.  He was looking up the hill.  I figured another bull was coming in.  Sure enough, he came over the ridge and we could hear him.
This was the first bull...

The way he was hesitating and went silent, I assumed the other bull might be bigger.  This bull certainly wasn't going to run in.   I got a glimpse of the bull as he crossed a switchback in the road.  I was hoping hed run the road so I could see him, but he instantly went back in the bush.  I told Madison he was going to circle us.  He was grunting up a storm, and as you may or may not know, Moose make alot of racket when they charge through the brush.  Her eyes were like saucers.  She tucked behind me. LOL   He emerged from the brush at about 25 feet or so.  He was too close for pics really.   :chuckle:   He kept circling us.  I'd call and he'd stop he then finally moved a bit away.   He finally left.    We repositioned ourselves.  Now that the other bull saw this one, he started coming in.   This bull kept following us .  He finally left us to intercept this other bull.   They were close enough in size that they may have fought.   I could hear ANOTHER bull coming in.

We went down the road and parked and hiked out into another place I like to call from.  When it's quiet, you can hear real well.  SURE ENOUGH, another bull answered up on the ridge.   He came to treeline but wouldn't come any closer.   We talked back and forth a long time.  I tried all the tricks in the book but couldn't get him to come close.  I told Madison it was probably cowed up.  I told her we should go back to the truck, as there was a road above the moose.  Maybe we could call from there and do something different.

We proceed.   I get up above where he is and I step out to call.  I move away from the truck to the road bank in the tall weeds.  I look up and there he is standing 10-15 feet in front of me.  He spooks, and I spook, and 4 out of 5 cows that are with him spook. :chuckle:  I motion Madison to come over and finally the fifth cow explodes.   6 moose TEARING through the thicket.   Now thats loud.    I had photogrpahed this bull earlier in the week.

We are running out of time so I push it up the road.  I had two more calling spots I wanted to do, but only had time for one.   We take this trail for a road up the ridge.  We get to a spot to stop, park the truck and then climb up to the top of the ridge.  I let out a bellow.   I hear raking in the brush, then silence.   I kept thinking I could hear one coming in...no grunts, but movement.  I turn to whisper to Madison and ask if she hears it.   I call again.   We are sitting there and he emerges from the brush.

FULL FRAME.   He then came closer and closer.   I could tell Madison was a little uneasy.   I grunted and he finally moved to the side of us.   He was climbing the ridge and was in tall grass.   He stoped with nothing but his head sticking out of a bunch of grass.  VERY COOL SHOT.  My camera won't take a pic.  WTH!   I look.   Out of bullets.  I reach into my pocket for a spare "clip".   I forgot to replace it.  ALl my cards are in the truck.   CRAP.   I start deleting pics.  I try to take a pic of him.   I get a couple.  I'll probably use this pic in a calender so you guys are going to have to wait.   About that time a cow starts calling right underneath us.   Nice mating call.  I told Madison that between us and her we'd probably have several more bulls there shortly, but alas we had to go.   She had some schoolwork she needed to prepare for.   What a GLORIOUS morning.

Absolutely Awesome!!! I am thinking next October I am going to have to head down to Dillon and play with moose a bit... I think most all that country we were messing with, from the ranch, on up through Big Bull Alley and such, could be insane about this time of year... really wish I was still there hunting!!! :dunno:

Something Madison will never forget, dad calling in the moose, elk, etc.  Very cool pictures.  You have the eye.
