Moccasin Joe Blacktail doe in heat urin, thoughts?
« on: October 20, 2011, 07:19:06 PM »
I grabbed the last bottle of this snake oil at wholesale sports to give it a shot.  Anybody with experience with it?  Does it work?  More importantly, is it actual blacktail estrus urine or might it be another deer that they just package as blacktail?  From what I'm seeing since I got home, it may be dog urine.  My lab got a little red rocket when I let him smell it.  :chuckle:

What's your thoughts?

In the deer hunting forum a few weeks or so ago somebody started a thread called deer scents, a guy on there said he used it and it works, look it up and pm him, maybe he has more info.  I bought a few bottles after reading that post in hopes to use it to set my daughter up a shot when the rut is in full swing, figured it was worth a try so why not.
When you see the third, thin the herd.
Right now I'm somewhere picking up sheds.

I've seen Moccasin Joe Blacktail and Mule Deer "Doe in Heat Urine" work.  I was hunting on the Kitsap Peninsula and had a young Blacktail buck come in fast and excited with his head down sniffing like a German Shorthaired Pointer right where we had sprayed it about an hour before as we walked in.  I tried an experiment last Rifle Deer season (I had a bow tag) and bought some Mule Deer "Doe in Heat Urine" and applied it to the tail of a doe decoy on my forested property near Cle Elum and lured in the first two legal bucks (three point minimum) I had ever seen trailcam photos of on my land during rifle deer season.

I haven't had any luck with it yet. Tried it late last year after hearing of some of the contractors of where I work at using it with great success. Story is 4 hunters, 3 in tree stands in an area with a heavy population of deer. The 4th guy on the ground with rags soaked in the Moccasin Joe's Blacktail Doe urine tied to his boots. He walked in circles passing each guys tree stand, over and over. All 4 tagged out the same day. The guy on the ground arrowed his at 10 yards when he noticed one behind him. Never seen any pics of any of the bucks, not sure if it is true but made for a good story. I have had good success on the East side doing something similar. Walking in with pads on the bottom of my boots soaked and then hanging a couple tampons soaked in Tinks' around my stand or following a active scrape line and setting up along it.

It's my favorite scent for sure. Those bucks come running especially in the last 7-10 days of October.

No offence....but your nose may not be as fined tuned to scents as the critters in the woods.  :chuckle:

I hunt whitetails and have used a couple of brands over the years. For the last 8 years or so I only use a certain brand now. I do believe there are good and bad...or should I say ones that work better.

I do not have anything to add as far blacktail scents.
Just one more day

I set up a friend of mine with a bottle of the stuff and a doe call (the can) last year.  He was finally able to shoot a buck at 15 yards that he has been after for 4 years.  He drew it out of a super thick patch of brush.  He said that it came in with it's nose to the ground like it was being pulled by a string.

I think the effectiveness of cover scent is different than the effectiveness of lure scent

I've had it work before...... The moccasin joe stuff is always some brown sludge, and to me many of their scents smell the same. I'm unsure how they get brown sludge from doe pee. Guessing there is a few more ingredients.

My favorite is the code blue single deer stuff. Blacktails don't seem to care that its a whitetail scent.
The code blue doesn't smell like the moccasin joe brown sludge.....

It's taken from blacktail in captivity. It drains down through a catch basin on a concrete pad. The brown sludge is deer crap. Most bottles of Moccasin Joe aren't as effective as others. It all depends whether or not the doe was in peak heat cycle when the piss was collected. You might have to buy ten bottles to find that one that works :chuckle:

Where do they have these black tails in captivity? I always wondered that.

On their website they are all about supporting "privately owned hunting ranches" and talk all about them on links and "about us" ect.... Couldn't find anything about blacktails in captivity. They sure are proud of their plastic bottles.

I used the stuff for years and it seemed to work. The modern late buck season it seemed to get some deers attention. Killed a buck or two using it in combo with grunts, doe bleats, and sometimes rattling.

I really don't understand their claims of all natural no preservatives and yet no expiration date. I'd think piss and poop sludge would go south pretty quickly. Wonder if they pasteurize it or something.

Interesting stuff...... Snake oil....

Wonder if they pasteurize it or something.

A retired biologist told me there is a blacktail research center some where in Oregon where the piss is collected.

I think if sealed in the bottle and not exposed to oxygen it doesn't go rancid.  Even if it does smell bad the only ingredient a buck hones in on is the hint of estrus.

I read an article in Time magazine a few years back that hit the nail on the head with the blatant fraud in consumer products. The best example they gave was, you guest it, Tinks doe in estrus.

Here are some things to think about, they sell millions of little bottle of what they call doe urine. The problem is you would have to have a herd of does in the 6 figures, that's 10s of thousands to equal what they sell just in the months of August through November.
Now remember does are in estrus for only a couple months a year.

So where is all the urine coming from? But it's 100% natural  :dunno:

The article compared Doe urine to the "Hoodia" craze, where in just 2008 the amount of products sold supposedly with hoodia in them just in the United States alone, would have completely depleted the worlds supply of Hoodia. Now add every other country and every other year and the picture gets a little more clear.
Nothing will cover your scent, no charcoal based clothing or spray will take your scent away.

Can they act as an attractant? Probably, but so can apples.

The American Soldier and Jesus Christ. One died for your freedom, the other for your soul.

He trains my hands for war and my fingers for battle.
