What size of shot do you use on ducks

I find that with #4's I cripple too many ducks, and we waste valuable time waiting for the dog to swim it down and bring it back.  I switched to #2's and no longer have that issue.

I use them all! They all work fine! Ducks under decoys, #4's if I had to choose.
I felt like a one legged cat trying to bury a terd on a frozen pond!

I use 2's when I think there are geese around. 4's for ducks only. 6's if I am hunting woodies and teal or any ducks over decoys.

Most important thing is the pattern of the gun. People should really pattern different loads and see what their pattern is with
each load.

My favorite is Kent 3in 3's can't find them that often but when i run dry my nest case is gona be them. I've killed ducks with 6 steel on up to BB No cripples with the 6 when decoyed in close. Lots of guys that kill way more birds than me swear by 2 or BB or everything because it patterns wellon their gun and they shoot the same thing all the time. leads change due to wind, & distance. when you start changing shell and shot size it makes it hard to figure out...  :twocents:

3's or 4's. I like the Federal bluebox 1 1/8 oz. 3" loads. I had some 3" 1 1/4oz. 4's that were lights out on mallard ducks on opening weekend.

Why you guys use such heavy steel for ducks? If I can get 5 or 6 in steel that's what I'm throwing  :)

I've used Steel 6 before and they were awsome... But IMO they only work under a couple of conditions. They worked really good when i had them cupped and so close i could swat them (It seemed) I liked the 6s because they brok both wings and the birds didn't go anywhere but down... I just don't think they dit that well at 30-40yrds.  :twocents:

Why do you use small shot?  What’s the advantage?

Lots more shot and you don't have to knock them back 10 ft, you have to get threw the feathers and into the meat! I like small shot! I used to have 3 inch number 5 that I would put in for the first shot when hunting geese then 2s after that!
