Well, not the kind of bull we expected when the squaw was drawn for her Toutle bull tag. However, after an absolutely awful early season the late season comes with a completely different set of priorities. She is thrilled even though she thought there was more on that right side as did I. Guess the mind plays tricks on you after 15 miles of hiking, nine creek crossings with no elk seen and then when you finally get back to the truck and start to relax "Wholly Crap! There's a nice bull right there."

She kept it together very well. The 48 yard shot was perfectly placed and he went down after a short dart uphill. Just to be safe we went back to camp, Lorraine told the story to everyone at the Kidd Valley RV park who would listen, ate dinner, toasted a celebratory whiskey with our hunting partners and returned to blood trail a few hours later. The wait was not necessary. Blood trail was about 3' wide and even in the dark we did not hesitate a step when following it. The bull went down less than forty yards from where we had last seen him - 70 maybe 80 yards from where the arrow had hit.

Broken off some time ago. No ring like you would find if it had been done in velvet. But long enough for it to be rubbed smooth. This bull had awful hoof rot on the left hind leg. 30 to 40% smaller hind quarters and backstrap on that side. I'm sure he would have died this winter if she had not tagged him so we didn't feel too bad about not waiting for him to regrow a perfect set of antlers.

Meat was just fine. Though we did take extra care removing most of the leg below the hams before getting too far in cutting him up.

Nice bull! one of the bulls we got this year had hoof rot and the meat was fine. I just think it depends on if they are feverish or not.

the bull i shot in the coweeman had a hoof that looked about like that. same thing with hind quarter and backstrap on that side. great job on the elk! that hoof rot is definitely a nasty thing to have out there.

It's unfortunate that a lot of those Elk have that hoof rot, but like you said good thing she put it out of its misery.

wow, I know hoof rot is around the Toledo area and up near boisfort but didnt realise it made its way up to the Toutle.. Bummer that stuff can wipe out a heard.. I remember a few years ago i was helping a buddy and his son fill his cow tag in the Boisfort area and there was snow on the ground and it was unreal the blood in there tracks, it looked like blood trails everywhere.. that is a dandy 5 on that side, probably as nice as bull as i have seen come out of there in the last few years...

I saw that bull during the early muzzy season still running his herd with a nice satellite 4 pt. Very unique bull congrats.

Is it just me or does this bother anybody else? You put in for years to draw a QUALITY bull permit and when you do finally draw you end with a bull with hoof rot, and however many % less meat on one side of its body, and have to toss a portion of the meat away, Idk kinda irks me. You talk to Matts Custom Meats in Rose Valley and in some severe cases they have to toss the whole leg. I seen a thread on moose with worms, and people getting issued new permits, I think they should in these cases as well. I know you didnt have to shoot that bull, but how in the heat of the moment how can you determine it has hoof rot unless you see it limping across a clearcut. This is just my

on the matter, I think they should give you another tag, you did them a favor by destroying that animal, still think its a nice bull though.

Do you think its possible that the injury to the foot had something to do with the abnormal antler growth on that side. I have heard things of the such just was not sure.

I was thinking the same thing. Perhaps he slipped and fell because of the foot? Or the horn on that side was small and weak because of the foot on the other side? I do know that if there is skeletal injury to the left side of an animal the horns on the opposite side will be effected. I know it is not skeletal, but I'd think it could lead to the same thing.

I used to have a big bull I hunted every opening day. After a few years he was a beautiful crowned 7 point. I pounded him hard at 30 yards, but hugged the left shoulder too tight and drilled the base of the shoulder blade just above the shoulder joint. After tracking for about a half mile we found the arrow broke off about two inches from the broadhead. Last day of the season I saw him pushing some cows through a clearcut like nothing had ever happened.

That following opening day he was back in his usual spot with a large harem of cows. Still had the large 7 point crown on the left side, but this year his right side was a rag five. First time in four years of chasing him he'd been anything but perfect. He was poached that night with a rifle in the moonlight when he got too close to the road (Damn Low Life *censored*s). Never got to see what damage that broadhead did to the shoulder, but it had to be the reason he became abnormal.

its caused from a Bacteria, and I think caused from beef cattle; and spreads by elk walking in other elks tracks, its spreads like wild fire too.. Ive seen it in the boisfort area with a heard of about 50 and 99% of them had the big limp going on, I walked out in the field where they were and it was like 50 different blood trails. The disease basically eats the animal from the inside out, a bad case of it, the elk will be spoiled and green as it is still alive. If the meat is spoiled the game department will issue you a new tag, atleast i seen that happen in the past. Some people say if its not taken care of it could spread big time and destroy a majority of our elk herds.. I havent seen it yet where I live or where I hunt, but its not to far away..

The game department claims it's not bacterial but a mineral deficency. Selinium and copper I believe.... But thats coming from the game department so who knows....

I know a guy that did the exact same thing with a WA bull moose permit. Leveled what he thought was a monster in heavy brush. Turned out its right side was completely broke off. I honestly thought he would never recover from it.

buddy of mine shot an old regressive bull during the regular archery season, 36 inch spike and a morphadite spike on the other side...He was beat to hell and one of his rear tenderloins was gone...nothing but scar tissue where it should have been. the three of us looked at each other and back into that elk about a half a dozen times scratching our heads before we continued de boning it

Congrats to Lorraine! To get it done with a bow and only have a 70 yard recovery must have taken an excellent shot!

At 48 yards with a 50# bow and 24.5" draw length she missed her spot by only 1.5 to 2 inches. Perfect shot on a running cow last year at 45 and annihilated her 4 point bull before that at just over 50. None went any further than this one. In fact the 4 point only went 5 yards with her arrow thru his heart. Well tuned bow, extremely sharp carbon steel blades, a flawless follow thru, lots of target aquisition practice, and of course a great teacher

(who she never listens to). Adds up to one mad killer of a squaw.

You should see what she does to the poor little 450# bears with her 25 Bob. Needless to say, most of the blood trailing practice we get are on animals I shoot.
