So for the first time i am going to pull the trigger and apply for Montana combo in 2012.
So i guess what i am looking/asking for is unit recomendations for good DIY odds ,best 10 day strech to plan for, places to get information on pretty much anything that will be helpful,I have wanted to do this for many years and finally got the green light unfortunately it  is probably my only opportunity to do this in many more years so i really want to take advantage of the best information that i can get
so i figured that Hunt-Wa has the biggest Knowledge database that i know of
I know i will probably get plenty of chit about this and that but any information that i can come up with can only help with the final choices without making too many wrong ones
It is a ways out but like anything it will sneak up on me so i want to start planning and researching sooner rather than later
any info will be greatly appreciated
                                        Thanks to all

After going to Montana 3 times in the last 5 years.  The last year was horrible.  Winter kill was very bad. Wolves. etc.  We are going to wait a couple of years.
We were like 7 for 7 one year and 8 for 9 the other. and last year 0 for 5.

Correct me if I am wrong, but you may not be able to get a license the first year you apply.

In 2011 the big game combo went under sold by 1200........went back on sale a month later and sold all in 3 days......if you do not draw they have an alternates list for returned tags and this year there were available tags thru hunting season. I am sure there would not be problem getting a tag in 2012  :twocents:

You'll likely draw this year.

I don't understand your question about units.  Are you asking about limited permit units?  If you draw an elk license, you can hunt any general elk unit in the state.  If you're looking for good LE permits, the biggest thing you should research is the amount of available public land.

There are only a handful of LE deer permits in the state, but there are good number of districts in the western part of the state that are unlimited permit.  I.e. have to draw but can only hunt mule deer in that district.

Are you bow hunting or rifle hunting?

Deer numbers aren't good.  I saw tons of elk.

It will be Archery
I suppose what i mean by units is .I am looking at GMU's in the western part of the state with good elk numbers and public land access,I will not be able to do any physical boots on ground scouting so it will basically be a drive over set up camp and hope that we pick a huntable area, just trying to get information that might put a little bit of an advantage and maybe save a few days of total blind scouting :dunno:
   Thanks again for any help
