Desert doe tag

my duck hunting buddy pulled this tag, this is his second deer season and hasn't ever shot a deer.  he had me put him in for tags and didn't care if it was a buck or doe tag. i've heard a lot about the late desert buck tag and figured i'd try to kill two birds with one stone and put him in for that tag and i'd tag along to scout it out to see if i need to start putting in for the buck tag. 

i need help with a good starting point, like what part of the unit to focus on.  been looking at the area east of dodson road, north of frenchman wasteway.  figure we'll have to do a few duck hunt/scouting trips in novemeber. i'm also curious if the deer will hang around in the wildlife areas/public areas once the duck season cranks into full swing, or do they generally hang down into the private areas.  thanks for any info/insight.

Thats probly the best place you wont have to deal with private property. some buddies and i camped in there for a week to hunt yotes, duck, geese and pheasant and look for the big bucks in december. rode horses in a 3 mile circle around camp one day and jumped around 140 does from the russian olives and sage flats funny thing is when they spooked they would just go to the other side of a dune and stop so we would haul ass on the horse to get within ten yards to see if they were bucks, all does. we did see two 190 plus bucks when we were spotlighting for yotes.

Pick any road out there, pull over, get out your shooting sticks, take aim and dump one. 

No really. Lots of public access and lots of does. Sholdnt be a problem. Send me a PM if you want specifics.

yeah once the cool weather hits in fall you will see those deer at all times of day and just about anywhere in the unit,like stickslinger said pick a road, park, and dump one. good luck and hope u get to see some big bucks too since i have no doubts you will be able to kill a deer

well i can comfortable say i am not going to worry about it so much now.  i think i'm more excited than my buddy is to go and see what this unit is all about.  i guess the 25% that didn't fill their tags last year must have had their scopes jarred loose driving to anyone of those roads and missed.  thanks for encouraging words

If you cross some of the waterways on the foot bridges make sure to mark your trail or bring a GPS. Its real easy to lose your trail and the bridges are few and far between. We always saw lots of dear at daybreak walking away from the water. There are some nice deer in that unit.

Thanks for starting the post OltHunter. I was getting ready to do the same thing. Both of my sons have Desert B tags so we will be over their some place also. We have done a lot of fishing in the area but no hunting. So far it sounds like most everyone is recomending the public property. I wasn't sure if we should be talking to some of the farmers in the area or just concentrate on the public area's. I was also thinking that maybe going into the dunes by boat might be a good plan. Anybody have any thoughts on that?
