Wow!! I just read something about those in the Seattle Times Sunday auto section a few months back!!! Jeeze I can't remember what all was said about them but it wasn't good. My '06, 4.6 wasn't included in it, good thing. Sounded like it's a real b**ch to do without breaking them. Wish I could help ya more.

Is a huge pain, books at over 2 hrs. and yes they do break, in fact Ford makes a "special tool" to remove them after they break.

Yes it is a big deal. I am having mine done at the stealership. They said they do more than anyone on the west coast and only one time had to take engine apart. They want 450.00 which includes 2 broken removals and then 1/2 hr. for each additional one. I am anticipating 8 broken was wondering what other people experienced. Yes the 4.6 is not involved only the 5.4. I guess Ford did have a better Idea to get you to spend a lot of money.

I had one done a couple of years ago, and I think two plugs broke.

They probably went to far in trying to fix the spark plug blowout problems with the previous 5.4 heads. If you google it, you'll find that the earlier 5.4s had a habit of spitting out plugs, along with the threads.

Ironic that this came up, day before yesterday i pulled out of the drive way and gave my 01 f250 with the V10 a little gas and bang, scared the crap out of me. The loudest noise i ever heard. come to find out I blew the #5 plug right out.  The guy at The stealership said it was common with the V10 and the 5.4 motors.  I have 130k on mine and he was suprised that it didn't happen sooner.  Unfortunataly for me they couldnt repair it and I ended up having to get a new head.  :bash:

Piss poor design. I knew about the problem when I bought mine used from a Chevy dealer. I talked the dealer into changing the Plugs before I would purchase the truck. The dealer wasn't aware of the problem and agreed to change them. I guess they only broke one plug. Mine were done at 87k.
Will hunt for food.
