Yarn Rigging
« on: February 08, 2012, 01:03:46 PM »
Ok so I am susposed to be cleaning the house for the wife but for some reason tying leaders for the Grand Ronde seemed like a much better option! Boy was I right!

I figured because I am trying to postpone the cleaning i would post some pics of my favorite yarn rigs to fish and how I do them up.

I like to take some glow-bug yarn and split it in half, right before I am about to pull the loop tight on the bottom part of the hook I take a piece of yarn and put it in the bottom loop and pull every thing tight.

Next I take a corky and slide it down on the line. I take a piece of extra fishing line and feed both ends of it through the bottom part of the corky. I then take a piece of yarn and put it through the loop at the bottom of the corky and pull the line and yarn through the corky until the yarn is peeking out the top of the corky.

After I have pulled the yarn through the corky and removed the peice of line I like to pull the yarn back down into the corky

Once I have it trimmed up I slide the corky down to the hook and make everything look nice and pretty!

And this is the final product

Now get to the river before she finds out you neglected you're chores.  :chuckle:

Looks good. What kind of hook are you using there and how do they perform? I've been using full circle offset octopus hooks but I'm looking for something different. The ones I'm using are great but only in perfectly placed hooksets when all of the stars align.

The hooks are matzuo sickle and the size is #4. I have been using them for about two years and I love them. So far I have gone through about 10,000 of them and have had no problems. They are super sharp straight out of the box and you can re-sharpen them very easily. On top of all that they are super cheap I think I am paying about $.04 a hook verses $.19 a hook with gamies and out of thousands of hooks that i have ordered I have only had a few that have slipped through quality control (had the same problem with gamies).

those look pretty good!

i just started fishing with yarn balls a few weeks back.  i've known about them for years but never really gave them a chance(i usually like to fish bait).  catching 3 steelhead on them in a morning made me a believer on monday.
you can still get gas in heaven, and a drink in kingdom come,
in the meantime, i'll be cleaning my gun

I have been using Glo Bug Bling Yarn.  Now I do not know if it is me or not but I  think that stuff catchs more fish.  And I think it would look good on that set up.

I like the glow bug flash yarn but I was just using the stuff I had layin around the house trying to procrastinate on the whole house cleaning. I guess I could have went to the store and got some more but than I probably would not have gotten any thing down and the wife would have spent the nite on the couch mad at me !

Thats the nice thing about using the yarn you can make it as big or small as you want to. I usually start out with a big tuff of yarn when I am getting my rigs all set up. But when I fish them they get trimmed to fit the conditions. The corky that I used to tie the rig that I took pictures of is about the size of a large bead but the photos do not do it justice because there is nothing for perspective on the cutting board. But if you look at the right had side of the roll you can see some larger corkies and they may be able to give you and idea of the size of the corkies.

And its always easier to make things smaller on the river but it can be harder to make your fuzz rigs larger if need.

I use the number 14 size corky on the river.  Seemed to work better.

I am heading over there next weekend to fish with my son (Attends WSU) on Saturday evening, Sunday and Monday morning.  How is the Ronde River?  I am thinking about buying a Idaho fishing license for the Clearwater.

So how is the fishing?
