Hunter Orange
« on: February 17, 2012, 08:19:38 AM »
Does a color have to be called "Blaze Orange" in order to be legal? I've been wanting to get a waterproof jacket for the Wetside that is bright orange, curious if this in "Flash Orange" would be okay most likely?

I don't think there's anything in the law specifying the exact shade of orange that is required. So I think if it's orange it's legal. That jacket looks a lot brighter than some of the old, faded orange vests I've seen guys wearing.

That's kind of what I have figured but wasn't sure if there was an exact rule stating how bright of an orange it had to be.

The WAC states the clothing must be "fluorescent hunter orange".  I don't think every shade of orange would necessarily qualify, although there is no specific definition.

I agree I think if it's bright then it will be just fine. I have seen a lot of orange vests in different shades over the years. As long as they stand out and are bright I could never see anyone getting in trouble over it. I can't stand people that take it off. Or don't use any when required :bash: Common sense people

The Marmot jacket looks fine.  It is a judgment call, but if you look at these two photos I think you would see why.

the whole deal is can another hunter see you as a shootable animal or something else.  something else qualiafies(sp, how the hell do you spell that) as lots of stuff but a big bright orange thing is not what i would shoot or eat.  mike w

I use a faded orange jacket all the time. The UV brighter is what most deer see anyway. If i get harassed by game officials by my faded appearance we are going to have a loooooong talk. Its for my own safety anyway so if i'm willing to go with a more faded version who am  i really hurting? I'm not dressed in a black fleece like a bear....  :twocents:

You can buy hunter orange vests for $10 or less at almost every sporting goods store in the fall.  Buy one, wear it and you're legal regardless of what is underneath.

What part of his post are you saying is not true?

Are you saying the $10 or less vests are not 400 square inches?

yes 400 square inches. Typicaly a vest and hat. I have never heard of a agent getting out a tape measure. But look at small kids, there is no way that their vest is 400 square inches.
If you have vest on most game agents will not bother you. I have been checked many times with a black hat and an orange vest. Never anything said.

And in this state cammo orange is legal.
