Need Westport charter recommendation on Rock fish & Ling cod
« on: February 21, 2012, 03:36:11 PM »
Looking to book a charter trip out of Westport in early April for Rockfish/Ling cod.

Have any suggestions on a good outfit before I blindly pick a charter?

Thanks,

Go out on the Hula Girl! Great boat & crew. You will have a blast! I took the advise from a post like this a few years ago on Hunt WA, always try to book on that boat from now on!

The two best boats for bottomfish here are 1. the slammer ran by Rhett weber and 2. Hula Girl Steve Westrick both are great with there fisherman and know where the big lings live. Also both boats are top of the line.

Should be great! The big lings are still "shallow". Wish I could go!

The captain of the playboy too is an awesome guy, but his boat isn't exactly the nicest in the fleet, he will definitely get you on the fish though. The Ms Magoo is my favorite boat in westport, its by far the cleanest and most up to date vessel. Other than that the Hula girl is good, and the slammer is great, they know some really good ling holes and usually have a pretty cool crew onboard. Bottomfishing in April is always good, but the weather usually isn't, be prepared for lots of pukers and talk to the doctor about perscription motion sickness for your son, it will make it a much more enjoyable trip for both of you.

Can't put enough emphasis on the sea sick part, regardless of who you go out with.  Remember, those boats don't come back in when someone gets sea sick and there's nothing worse than being out for 8 hours and watching a loved one wish they could die!!! Westport trips, particularily bottom fishing are the worst in the world for getting sea sick.  Hate to say it, but unless you're sure your son doesnt get it, I'd really recommend taking a shorter trip out before doing it. Not trying to discourage you, but I used to take out charters and watched many parents go through hell when their children begged them to go back to shore.

oops-for some reason I thought you were taking your son, sea sick warning still applies, but I guess only to you.  I'm really sensitive to taking small kids out on Westport charters and must have read into your post that wasnt there.

I booked a trip on the Slammer on April 1 . Then I heard about the weather conditions and switched it to May 27. My GF gets seasick real easy, so I didn't want her to hate me for taking her out. :chuckle:

We bottom fished out of west port last spring.  I took my then 7 year old out and he had a blast.  I think we went in June though, so the weather was a bit better.  Make sure to get the prescription motion sickness stuff and throw a patch on you and your boy for good measure.  Have fun!

:yeah: I can get sick on a lake if it's rough enough, I use the patch every year out in Neah bay and it works!! Can't wait for the season to kick off, sea bass and ling are the funnest fishery out there. :twocents:

The patches are the way to go most everyone seems to have good luck with them, if it were me I would prefer the pill form of Scopace, but doctors seem to be perscribing the patch more than the pill. Either way, I definitely suggest anyone going that has limited time on the water to take one or the other, whether you choose to fish in April or June it doesn't take much to make someone sea sick and it really isn't fun for anyone when you have a sick fishing partner.

Best fishing in AK I have ever had is when all others including deck hand but me, my bud and captain were blowing chunks....  We got 16 Halibut to the boat all in shooter range-- 100lbs....  Stayed out on deck on way home cause the galley was filled with puke and stunk like nothing else.  Poor Captain had to go inside to drive home...  I would never wish seas sickness on anyone, I have yet to have it, but do not not ever want it either...

Yeah, fishing can be great when everyone else on board is green at the gills. My Dad and I used to always go out on the smallest boat possible, then run around the deck catching everybody's limits. I usually did better weatherwise later in the season. Big lings can come early or late. Yell for a net if ya get a hitchhiker, and keep his ugly head under the water until they scoop it. 9 years young can be kinda small for that type of fishing. You don't want to burden the crew unneccesarily, as the action is fast once you're on em. A lot better to spend the money on bottom fish than salmon, especially with a kid. The crew dosen't hook the fish, and mooching takes a while to learn. Good Luck and Great eating!

Never heard of ginger gum but thats a good suggestion. Ginger has been proven to calm the stomache, I always suggest people bring some ginger ale and I have some ginger pills I found at a vitamin store

How is fishing for Rockfish/lingcod in early April?

I have been out on the Rampage the past two years and we have limited on nice lings and big seabass both trips.  And if you are taking your son he had a deal where you can take a youth (16 and under) for free with a paying adult for his bottom fishing trips. Here are a couple pictures of my dad and my son from our trip last year in early April

How much are the trips running?

I decided to hold off on taking my boy until the weather is a little more favorable for him, maybe in June, that will give me another excuse to go again.

I will be on the Hula Girl with a few buddy's March 31st.

Thanks for the advise on the Rampage, I will check into that when I book the next trip with the kiddo.

I've only fished WP once so I can't help you much other then to say, stay away from the Silver Duchess, slowest boat in the fleet and the capt. is a piece of work, especially if you bring kids or inexperienced fishermen with you.

Slammer!
I get sea sick really bad.  Start taking ginger capsules a week before and snack on candied ginger and or ginger snap cookies while fishing.  I had my 18 foot work boat a couple miles out past Tatoosh at Neah Bay, came back in 16 foot swells and never got sick due to the ginger.

I would be intrested, on a Saturday, and a Sunday trip with my daughter(10). We will be booking this week, Let me know if anyone is serious.
For that price, I cant pass up all the fish we would catch in 2 days for the price of one!

Planning on trying out Wesport Sportfishing for the 1rst time. Want to take out my 13 yr old nephew. Sounds like a deal, and kid is real good out on the Sound and rivers. The light tackle aspect is very appealing. I always bring my own anyhow, and mostly they want ya to drop down with 10 oz. Every boat I've ever been on fishes differently, and I even clued some skippers in to stuff I had seen on other boats and in other fisheries. Thinking that I used to go out on El Tigre which is now in Ak, Prime Time who is also gone I think, but he was great, The Deluxe, and Coho Charters' Shenandoah's (sp?) sister ship whose name I disremember at this point. The captains are usually way better than the deckhands, and yeah, I bait my own hooks, anybody else's if they're busy, undo bird's nests for newbies,  unpin my fish, and let the greenest guy on board reel up the last one of the day. Then still tip my deckhand.  Only bad trip (just knocked wood) was when I overslept and didn't make it out to the boat in time. Two State Troopers slowed me down a little, for a while.
