« on: February 23, 2012, 10:07:11 PM »
Never sold or trasfered ownership so i am kinda curious.
I plan on buying a handgun for my son, assuming i will have to register it in my name when i buy it.How do i go about trasfering it into his name when i end up giving it to him?

How old is your son?

You can give it to him if he's legally allowed to own one.

Just curiously, if you're planning to buy it for him and then give it to him, why not simply let him buy it?

There is no need to transfer anything into his name. We don't register handguns in this state.

If you wanted to voluntarily report the transfer, you could with this form:

The dealer that sells the gun keeps the completed form 4473 in their files.  This form contains the name of the purchaser but that information does not get "registered" anywhere else.

And it doesn't legally have to be in his name for him to own it.

Right. Because there is no such thing as "gun registration" in this state.

The only time there could be a problem is if the gun got into the wrong hands and was used in a crime, and the gun could somehow be traced to the dealer that sold it.
