Choke Tube ?
« on: February 29, 2012, 05:41:16 PM »
I need some help guys and gals. I am taking my 10 yr. old out for the youth opener the first weekend in April. He has a Mossberg 500 20 gauge. I was going to get a turkey choke for it, but am having difficulty finding one. Is it necessary to have one on a 20 gauge? :dunno:

Yes! without a good choke the brids have a lot more chance of getting wounded. You can pattern it now and see how it shoots that being said you will still want a full or extra full type choke. Wholesale sports might have one in you are in a area that has a wholesale sports.

Use a full choke with hevi shot 3 inch loads. Pattern it before you go and make sure you know your range of lethality.

My son has the same gun......I got lucky and found turkey choke for it in the bargain cave a few months ago.... Sportsmans Warehouse had a couple when I was there a few days ago but they were NOT cheap! My sons gun throws a tight pattern with his full choke......cant wait to see what it does with a super full choke.....I might use it for my hunts too....

I always used Primos jellyhead chokes in my mossys, 835&935 12GA. I would imagine they make some for the 500 20GA also. All my shotguns with xtra full chokes have patterned high at 25 yards. Make sure to put it on paper and anything under 25 yards I say aim for the base of the neck.  :twocents:

I have spent hundreds on choke tubes over the years! The jelly head is the choke that I have been shooting for the last 3 years. I have taken more then  a couple birds with it and also use it when I call yotes. It is a lead shooting sob!

Mossberg 500's use Winchester chokes. They interchange with a bunch of different brands.
Carlson's makes some awesome tubes. I use one of their turkey chokes in my Charles Daly and will likely use one in my new Remington.
Here's the one that they have for your 500:

Scroll way down to the bottom for the 20 gauge turkey tubes.

I think the Jelly Head chokes may offer it in the .20 gauge.  As mentioned a full or X-full is the way to go.  I have killed them with my modified choke, but they were close and I had some payload behind the shot.
Cut em!
It's not the shells!  It's the shooter!

Hi Turkeyfeather,

My kids have the same problem.  A Mossy 500 and a youth version and I've not been able to find a turkey choke for them yet.  On the other hand both have harvested a couple turkeys each using their full choke.  We did pattern the gun with several brands of shells and found the best.  The other key is that they have taken fairly close shots.  More like 20 yards rather than 40 yards.  Good Luck!

Winchester chokes and Browning Invector tubes will fit a Mossberg 500. 12 gauge, 20 gauge, etc. Same threads, they will fit.
Here's a Primo's tightwad that will fit your 500:
