Prince of Wales Island here we come.....
« on: March 15, 2012, 05:02:54 PM »
Cabin and air fare paid for  :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL: :IBCOOL:

Flying out may 4 th to take some nice bears and do some fishing  :fishin:
Hoping to keep it under 2k but we will see. In to it about 1K sofar and I have not even left yet  :chuckle:

Its going to be my first trip to hunt Alaska and I hope not my last.

Our hopes are to go down to Dall ISland and look for them trophy bears hanging there, but that will all depend on the weather. If the weather is to rough, then it may be to risky to make the trip to the island, so lets hope for some good weather come May

This is the last year for over the counter bear tags. Next year its draw only, and rumor is, only 10% are going to non residence hunters  :bash:

In our research, we did find lodges that cost between 800 and 1000 per person, but most have a 4 person minimum. One place we found, cost 1000 per person for lodging, vehicle, and boat, you provide the food. Another place was food and lodging with boat but you have to rent a vehicle to drive any place.

There are lot of options out there, you just gotta do the home work to find it. I'm all ready thinking of a fishing or blacktail hunting trip in the future if this pans out.

You will not be disapointed and most likely not want to hunt in Washington again  :)

If Dall Is. doesn't produce (little chance of that happening) stop by Waterfall resort (can't miss it) and take the mile long hike to the waterfall, take your pick of which bear you want.

Good luck!! Me and "Right Place Right Time" will be up in Petersburg doing the same time!  ?(may 5th - 12th) Cant F ing wait! This will be my second time. Missed one two years ago. That year (2010) was a really warm spring and most the bears had enough to eat in the woods so they didnt need to come out on the shores and eat the grass. This type of hunt is great!! Your own boat, drop crab pots on your way out, fish for halibat in the late morning then hunt for bears!! Then pick up your crab pots on the way back in!!!! Its the best. This year I will also buy a wolf tag. Last ti the other group in our camp got one on video but the season was closed already.

Good luck and have fun. Your going to love it!! Let us know how it turns out.

A couple of pics....

Beware of the tides!! We were 30 miles from the lodge, lucky another boat came by and helped drag it to the water. It was late in the day and thought for sure we were staying the night!!

So pretty up there!!

Good luck and have fun.  Have wanted to do that hunt, too bad it will be harder in the future to get a tag.   :bash:

May 5 could be too early on the timing, just depends on the weather up there in general the last two weeks in may and first week of june will be the best hunting

This winter has not been very harsh in SE Alaska this year and have heard that bears are starting to pop out of hibernation.

May 5 - 15 will be perfect. It is the perfect time for bear numbers and quality of hides. The grass will be coming up pretty good by then, but the woods won't be green enough that the bears have moved off the beaches. The clear cuts will also produce, but my money is 95% on the beach that time of year. Another bonus for people who are hunting up in the Petersburg area is that all the guides are in the meat of their brown bear season during that time, so you don't have to compete with them. Try your best to hold out for a boar, the reason its switching to a draw for NR unguided hunters is the large number of sows they harvest. Have a great time! For me the definition of spring is long warmish evenings with bears grazing on the beach like cows.
