Advisable or not adviseable if you shoot a 22 at a grouse while high buck hunting...will it push deer out of your area?

I can't say yes or no, but the way I look at it, if I'm not dieing, I'm not shooting anything other than a deer when I'm deer hunting.  Same goes for any big game hunt, why risk it by shooting anything else.  just my  :twocents:

If its slow and I'm heading back to camp for the day id be tempted, but that's about when that buck will show itself out of nowhere

I actually do have some input on this one. Last year I had an archery tag but I was hunting with a buddy with a rifle tag so I decided to carry a 22 for grouse. It was about 2 in the afternoon and we were still hunting through some timber to get to a vantage point for our evening hunt. The year before we had a close call on a legal buck about 1000 yards from this spot. Walked right up on him feeding at about 40 yards just never got a shot by the time we figured out he was legal. Well this year we see a grouse so I shoot him with the 22. As we continue hunting we get back to that spot we saw the buck the year before. Low and behold there are 4 bucks staring holes through us and very alert. We are convinced that our 22 shot at a very minimum made those bucks alert to our presence. We never did get to count points on the bucks as they l blew out of there before we could even get our binoculars up. We sure won't be shooting 22s again during deer season.

This past season was my first attempt for a deer...been a bird hunter for the past 20...needless to say I damn near went crazy everyday when I would flush 10 or more grouse.  Convinced my BIL to come back out and do the high buck with me...he owns an old school 22 survival rifle (barel and everything fits within stock) and he was talking about bringing it out so that we could take a grouse or two if we get sick of dehydrated meals.  I was thinking of those sub sonic rounds too.

This is exactly what I was afraid of!  Like anything else 'woulda coulda shoulda'...nothing in life is free of catch 22s!

Luckily we ended up getting a buck the next day so it all turned out ok.

Getting the turkey bug wasn't bad since it doesn't coincide with upland, however, deer has become a completely different story!  Between the limited time my wife gives me to hunt and the the 90 lb. chocolate lab begging me to take her hunting I'm constantly torn now.  It took a lot and I mean a lot! of self control not to go on a shooting rampage with my 308 with all those grouse zipping around.

It will make them more alert, possibly get them headed the other direction but in my opinion scent and sight will be what makes them get the hell out of there

My last high hunt I hunted very hard all morning not seeing anything shootable execpt grouse.  I went back to camp got my .22 woodsman left my rifle and went grouse hunting.  After shooting two big blues and walking back to camp I had one of those something is watching me moments.  Looking around I saw a very nice 3 point with eyegards just watching me.   I felt rather foolish not having my rifle so I started back to camp and he started following me.
When I got to camp I woke up one of my hunting partners telling him what just happened.   Wanting him to shoot it I told him where I last saw it, told him to take a stand I would hike around and above it and push it out in front of him.   As I'm hiking up I see my friend right where I want him to be all's good.  I get to the top of the draw start working down and out steps the buck just like he read our script on what was to happen.   I'm waiting for Bob to shoot and no shot, he got "bored" waiting for me and left his stand.  So I did what needed to be done.
That was my 4th trip in 4 years and my 4th high mountain mulie with one bear thrown in.  I have shot grouse every year I have gone up.

is it illegal to get grouse with rocks?

I think it might be...rocks are not listed as one of the means to take them, but then again air rifles I don't think are either but people use them, hire an attorney and let me know what his interpretation of the regs is :chuckle Read a funny ass story once where a guy was backpacking once and he got to a small spring took his pack off, bent down started drinking and looked up to see three grouse standing there watching him.  He grabbed a stick that was near by and clobbered the one grouse, the other two just stood there and watched!

my friends see nice bears every year on the high hunt and wont shoot one they wont even hunt bears on opening weekend of bear season in fear of leting the bucks know humans are there you gotta figure those bucks dont see humans too much through out the year when they start seeing humans they know its time to be alert i would not shoot any gun till its time to kill a buck
