westport lingcod reports
« on: April 16, 2012, 08:19:18 PM »
Well i have been reluctant to post my westport reports...but after the last 3 trips and the insane amount of people i really dont think i can make it worse  :bash:

I've been to westport jetty 5 times sense the 1st and i can say without a doubt the season has been great. Ive landed 7 keepers, keeping 3 and turned 20+ lings back. I fish light setup for lingcod and it has resulted in some big fish lost. I might have to switch back to my usual setup next trip
I have been fishing jigs. 1oz jigs with white or red 5" twin tails with motor oil single tail hanging off the back.
or 1 1/2 oz jigs with 8" single tails with the body cut down.

I do not jig or slowly reel the jigs like most guys...i very slowly drag the jig across the bottom. Or i let the current drag it, twitching it very quickly.

Most guys ive seen have had at least 1 legal lingcod with a few sea bass too. The bass have been all over the board this season, no real "average" size that ive noticed. So i haven't really beem to inclined to target them.

How far out have you been having to go? Been fishing the Ocean side? Can't wait to get down and try it! You ever use just herring? I was planning on using my 8'6 Heavy Salmon/Steelhead Ugly Stik with 65 pound Power Pro. Its my go to set up for kings in AK.

thanks
If you shoot the first one you will never get that true trophy.

 I fish a 10'6" 12-25 st croix avid with a cardiff 301 spooled with 40lb power pro.
The rod is such a over rated rod and fishes more like a 10'6" 10-20 gloomis.

I have never fished bait out there. And i fish the inside of the jetty. But off the ocean side was good for perch a couple trips ago.

I have done good on any tide. But incoming tide is best 90% of the time.

I've done good on perch out there. After we ravor clam we take the guts and stuff and use them for bait.

I was out there yesterday aswell. Barometer drop shut the fish off.

I caught 1 tiny bass and lost one ling around 40" right at the rocks. Both my buddies landed a barely legal ling each.

I've caught a few small lings off the finger jetty.

I wish i was headed out there tomorrow. Fishing should be good.

I went for the first time 2 weeks ago. Went with some friends on a charter. There were 20 guys on the boat total. We caught 200 bass in 75 minutes. That was some fast paced fishing.
I believe we ended up with about 20 keeper lings.
I twas my first time ever fishing the WA coast. It was fun and I caught 2 lings, nothing huge, but they eat just fine.

For the lings we used herring. dropped it to the bottom, reeled up 3 cranks and bounced it off the sand.
