Looking for a Decent Bear Call
« on: July 30, 2008, 02:58:09 PM »
I bought a Primos Ki-Yi call a few years ago.  The label says it can be set for cottontail and fawn distress call, but it seems to be a coyote call.  As you can tell I haven't used it much.  :bash:  Is there a standard call for bears that I can pick up at Sportsmans Warehouse or G.I. Joes?  I searched prior posts and didn't find much other than people's home made stuff.

There are specific calls at Sportsmans, etc, which are specific fawn/calf distress. Just check the packaging. Primos puts out a few, as does Sceery...there are also cub in distress calls...

A predator call is a predator call for the  most part.

A bear will come in one a cottontail distress call....just the same, a coyote, bobcat, or cougar would too...so don't get too hung up on that.

Cub in distress would be more bear specific, but be aware that often times those will call in sows (usually after they send their cubs up a tree)...so pay close attention.
I left it better than I found it...did you?
I hunt animals because veggies are too easy to stalk.

The above info is good info.

I prefer a certain sound and to me the call matters so I prefer custom calls. I do like the Burnham Brothers C-3 but I usually have to buy 3 to get the one that sounds good to me. So if you must get a production call I would say the BB C3 LR.
If you want custom them Bearman or Rainshadow will do you right.

Just got a custom bear call in the mail today from bearmanric... it's a sweet call, and I can't wait to get out and try it Saturday. I would agree that a predator call is pretty much a predator call... they're all meant to do the same thing right? This call from Rick is different from all the others I have though... and I own a lot of "eat-me" noise makers. The call Rick made for me is: A. LOUD!!! and  B. Requires very little effort/air to blow... which I'm sure will be a bonus when you've been huffing on it for an hour or two. Not to mention the craftmanship is great, and it came with a lanyard. Shoot bearmanric a PM, he's a great guy to chit-chat with... a pretty serious bear/cat hunter... and makes quality calls for very little dough.

How much does one of Bearmaniac's calls run?  Maybe Bearmaniac could send me a PM??? :)
