New to archery elk
« on: April 02, 2012, 08:29:51 PM »
We are attempting to plan an Eastern Oregon archery elk  hunt. We have gotten some good advice on where to go and we are planning on using a pack outfitter for a drop camp.

We were hoping to hunt the last week of the season which ends on the 23rd of September, however the outfitter is booked for those dates and he is trying to convince us that the first part of September is just as good.

I have always known the elk to be more vocal later in September but since I am new to archery I am not sure if it would be wise for us to go that early.

If anyone can tell me if they have been successful in early sept. I would be very appreciative. Thank

Ive been in the caps the first weekend of the season and the elk were going crazy, and been there at the end and couldn't buy a bugle. Hard to tell what they are going to do year to year. I would shoot for the middle cant go wrong there.
Its all about the bone baby!

I havent actually hunted the later part of september eastside. So dont have a ton of info on how vocal the bulls are then. My assumption would be similar to yours in that regard.

I always go opening weekend.... I havent killed a bull yet. But most of it is due to logistics and not nessacarilly a lack of elk encounters. U already have the logistics part taken care of it sounds like in the way of a drop camp.

My experience is that how key elk vocalization is to a hunt being "good" depends on several factors weather, TERRAIN, the hunters goals, and hunter pressure. The area I hunt has no pressure in the times I am going. The terrain lends itself fairly suitable to spot and stalk, and bulls are responsive to cow calls. Herds tend to be smaller groups and bigger bulls seem to secumb to cow calls quicker. Bulls bugle but its not the frenzy that is the later part of september. But if your in an area with more pressure, bulls may clam up, and if the terrain is such that alternate methods of hunting can be successful you could be setting yourself up for disapointment. In the end alot will depend on what your comfortable with.

Thanks for the advice.

It looks like we will be packing in about 20 miles with little to no pressure. Sounds like this area is good for  spot and stalk. Along with cow calling it might begood. But, as you have indicated the bulls could be very vocal early. Just a roll of the dice.

the peak of the rut the bulls will obviously be going crazy, but the early rut or pre rut can be good to, with bulls still in search of cows.they may come into cow calls looking for ladies. good luck :twocents:
