Anyone around here hunt with traditional patched round balls? Seems most of the posts are inlines and conicals, pellets, etc.

I shot my best group yet this week and thought I'd brag a bit and show what traditional gear can do. 5 shot group, 50 yards, standing offhand. .530 balls, 0.015 patch, 70 gr Goex FF black powder, Lyman Great Plains caplock that I built from a kit.

I shoot round balls. They can be frustrating.

But with a bit of work and practice they can be accurate.

While i dont ML here in Wa, in AR, when i did, all i shot was patched round balls. I never felt they lacked anything.

This is the .54 that I built . Then got cataracts and couldn't see the sights. Having the surgery now.
Hope to Shoot & Hunt with her next year though.

That is something I have been wanting to do one of these hunting seasons is kill a bull with an ol' flintlock and round ball . Pretty cool to see guys still hunting this way! Good job on the group, seems like a tough gun to group well with. Especially if you are used to modern rifles.

A friend of mine shoots both a bow and a Knight Bighorn. He claims that the bow is more accurate out to 100 yards. I haven’t seen him shoot either but I have no reason to doubt his claim.

Well, maybe the 100 yard part.

Let's hear about that rifle build Slenk. I had a great time putting mine together even though it was a kit and most of the rough stuff is already done, just a lot of fine tuning and finishing work. I think it turned out pretty good though, better than factory GPR's anyway.

Pretty nice job there MagKarl & CP . I have a twin to CP's rifle.
My First muzzleloader was a CVA kit in 1970 built several kits sense then .
Then started building from scratch. The gun in the picture is .54 cal 36" Green Mountain barrel , Large Siler Lock Kit(tuned by me) Stock was a piece of maple plank that a Friend brought from Kentucky for me.
I made all the other fixtures, butt plate, trigger guard, patchbox, and ramrod Ferrel's,and sights. Nose cap is poured pewter. Have some more Photo's I'll Dig out if you guys want.
