Thurston County No Shooting Zone Ordinance STOPPED
« on: April 18, 2012, 07:17:18 AM »
Good News on the Thurston County No Shooting Zone Ordinance:

Commissioner Wolfe formally announced at today's Commissioner Meeting that a "majority" of the Commissioners have decided to not do anything more with the No Shooting Ordinance.  They directed staff to spend no more time on this ordinance.  She also stated there was no safety concerns to justify this ordinance - based on WDFW and sherif's responses.

Reading between the lines, however, two things stand out:

1.  A "majority" means that someone dissented, and I suspect it was Commissioner Valenzuela since she looked like she was sucking on something sour during this announcement.  The fact they are divided (which I have never witnessed in three years) is huge and shows a big rift.

2.  They clearly felt the pressure of thousands of signatures, emails, and most importantly hundreds of people showing up for the work session. Combined with the people testifying at the meetings, the videos, and the negative media coverage - it became a sure political loser for them.  They finally recognized it, and they folded.

Many members of this site and WFW deserve some of the credit for this result, due to the e-mails and petitions they sent and signed.

The fact is that without the time spent over the last few months, the willingness to drive to the meetings, get people out for the work session, the emails, the signs, etc. - they would have passed this ordinance.  Now it is dead, and there was no need for costly court action, expensive attorneys, etc

The same coalition is now pointing it's successful gain towards aiding Kitsap, Island, and Jefferson Counties to overturn outrageous ordinances that have already been passed

Thanks to all that helped defeat this travesty.  We can take a breath at this point, but Commissioner Valenzuela has indicated we will see this again.  Keep your awareness and defenses up.  Our future steps should be proactive.  A good proactive step to take is to ensure all three of the Commissioners are voted out of office; this is the year for Romero and Wolfe.  Don't believe for second that Romero and Wolfe wouldn't have passed this if we hadn't applied so much pressure and if it wasn't an election year for them; they need to be replaced!

Interesting that the commissioners commented that they felt the ordinance left the county open to a lawsuit.

That is a cop out, WSU... They know it and so do we.  :twocents:

Not sure it is a copout.  I very specifically made that threat to each of the commissioners.

An injunction against them stepping on the 2nd Amendment. As soon as an ordinance passed, they'd be in court, I guarantee it. Some don't like this liability. Those are the smart ones. Valenzuela's a different story altogether. She's a real crusader. :puke:

Not liability, but exceeding their authority in passing the ordinance.  No real consequences for the county other than taking up their attorneys' time (unless they decided to hire outside counsel, then it costs even more money).
