Due to high demand...lingcod trip recap
« on: May 14, 2012, 09:01:29 AM »
So....D-Rock and I headed out on Saturday. What a great morning to be on the water. The sun was up, the view was awesome, and the water was flat. Got the boat in the water at the Everett launch nice and smooth. Letting the engine warm up D-Rock pulls out his secrect lure......the creature bait. He expounds on the virtues of the dangly skirt...the black bullet head with a painted eye...the super curly tail. It was sure to be a fish catching machine. I simple looked in awe and double checked the know on my plain ol leadhead jib with a white six inch Berkely grub...the standby on my boat. Putted out of the channel and ran up by hat. Fished along the south side and managed a quick rock fish on the first drift. Grub one, creature bait zero.

We had the spot to oursevles and despite the perfect weather and nice drifts we only managed a rockfish or two. Granted....they were nice sized and fun...but not the lings we are after. The flat water and easy running conditions were just to tempting. We pulled gear and headed to possesion bar.

Man was it nice running. There were a few boats fishing the ferry area but not really any nets in the air to speak of. We blasted out and got to fishing. Now...we are fishing my go to spot....a nice crescent shaped lip that holds a lot of fish. I've always caught lings here so I'm thinking we will have some more action. The fish count is something like H20  8 or 9.....D-Rock and the creature bait 0.....D-Rock and a different jig 3.

Anyway....we are fishing along picking up ( I am at least ) the random rockfish. No lings. No little lings, no big lings, no keeper lings. I've never fished this area and been skunked on lings.

So....the big moment of the morning....We are fishing along and out of the corner of my eye I see D-Rock hammer the rod back and say fish on. I'm thinking we got lingzilla on the end of the line and grab the camera. Finally a good solid fish. Film is runnind and he is working it up to the surface. I'm asking...."nice fish?"...with arms straining he replies "HEAD SHAKES!.......HEAD SHAKE!". Nice....I can taste the fish already. I'm moving the camera back and forth....bent rod.....D-Rock....the water....bent rod....just waiting for the leviathon to surface. Well, it did. Determination and brute force won out....the KELP was boatside. It was a really nice piece of kelp. It had nice growth....good girth...and a really nice rock along with it.

Ah yes...kepzilla!

Overall it was a great morning. We had a good time messing with the rockfish. Didn't lose too much gear, and had perfect weather. D-Rock even brought the donuts.

Almost the same thing here!!! Went back to Mutiny Bay for somemore halis on saturday after getting a 35lb one on friday. Took "The Warden" with me this time. My pole starts doin a dance and I let the circle hook do it's job and sit and wait a minute or so then start reelin in. Feels like a good fish so I give her the pole and get the harpoon ready to go. After a few minutes of reeling I can see down a ways and there's the hali color coming up!! Get's to a couple feet down and it's a big damn skate! :bash: WTF?! Well, it was fun while it lasted and she caught one of those ugly ol ratfish buggers later on and that was our excitement for the day. It was a nice day to be on the water to say the least.

I want to see the epic struggle with landing a kelpzilla....and closeups of the rock too....gotta love reeling in a trophy like that.  So does he think it will make the book?

Just make sure the "kelp-zilla" video gets posted first!  :chuckle: :chuckle: :chuckle:
