I still say drop the point system all together then there will be no more crying. It would be a free for all for everyone  :chuckle: At least with out point system if you got a chit load of points your odds are way better . What is not fair about that? I guess the problem is that people think they are entitled to a good tag but . Looking at it that way is crap. I have always looked at the draws as a bonus. If I get drawn hell yeah. If not well Im still hunting.
:yeah: I hate the sense of entitlement. That's what's wrong with our country.

I agree.  The way they let it get messed up is unrepairable.  Guys going 15 years is just crazy.  Idahos system would be nice.  Let guys with 6 or more cash them in and start from scratch.  It sounds like I get the better end of the deal as a newcomer. But i plan on the long haul so I would support the switch.  I doubt wdfw will ever step up and make a serious positive change in permits or even genral hunts.  They can only sell what the areas hold.  Starting from scratch with all of there logic is probably there best betto keep funds pouring in by the millions.  Cause I'm taking 2000+ to idahos economy.  I'm sure a lot of other are as well.

A lot of us got to 15 points by applying for hunts with very few tags though. Im sure if I had applied for Margaret nd Toutle for the last 15 years I wouldn't have this many points built up...  :twocents:

If you think your odds go WAY up with points, I don't think you've done the math completely. Odds if you have 1 point are about 0.001 percent (this is in general and not specific to one hunt) and if you have 17 points my odds go up to about 1.4 or around that. I used to know the odds better but through the years I try to block it all out, don't want grundy to hear me complain too much :chuckle:. You can tell the odds don't really improve much when you have a ton of points, the obvious reason is more guys have the 4 to 8 points in the draw then those with quite a bit more. By the way grundy, I haven't even started complaining yet.... just wait till I'm sitting on 26 points without catching a poacher and still not getting drawn!!!!!!!!!! :bash: :bash: That's when the real complaining starts. :chuckle:

I think WDFW have figured out the revenue hit they are going to take here in the near future with guys like me. There are a lot of hunters in this state in the 45-55 year old range sitting on 10+ points each. What we are looking at is the odds of ever drawing another quality tag once we have drawn and start back over at zero. I seriously doubt I will draw this year for "quality" deer or elk, but assuming I did, next year I would be back at zero. Now, if I started applying again, odds are that I would have to apply for at least those 10 years again, I'm betting by then it would be even longer, closer to 15 before getting another chance. This would put me in my 60's, and although I know a lot of guys hunting at that age, they are certainly not putting in the miles and elevation changes I do right now, how much of a "quality" hunt is it really going to be, and thats assuming I do draw in that time and am still vertical.

All this boils down to is guys drawing one more time and dropping out, never applying again. Now on the hunter side of things you are happy to be thinning the competition but from the revenue side of it you can see the $$$ dropping off pretty damn quick, a catch 22 for the dept. for sure.
The things that come to those who wait, may be the things left by those who got there first!

When he is 10 huh, might think about 15.

Lol. My sister had just turned 10 in the picture below when she killed this buck at 40 yards spot and stalk with her rifle (in WA). It was easily the greatest moment of my hunting career being right there over her shoulder and seeing her reaction. She loves to hunt and asks to shoot her bow whenever she can. This same year (2011) she killed her first elk right before her 10th birthday.

Why don't you save your advice for your own family and let others makes their own decisions. ;)

That's increasing your odds 1400 times. I would consider that way up  :chuckle:

Yes slim nice buck!  My son has a major advantage over most.  Looks like your sis does to!  We'll let others neglect the tradition till age 15.  Keep at it good luck on the draw and 2012!

I agree. All the guys complaining (about what i consider the fairest point system there is) where does it says just because you apply you will get a tag in your life?

Unfortunately Wyoming made the decision not Huntnphool. You can't hunt there until you are 12 and you can't even put in until you are 11 and that is only if you will be 12 by the time the season opens.

You can't draw if you don't put in.  PathfinderJR drew this tag with only 2 points (I've been trying to draw it for 7 years with no luck).  A lot of it is dependent on luck.  The simple fact is that we have more hunters in this state than we have quality animals.  I've been trying to draw a branched bull tag for 12 years and still haven't drawn.  Who knows how long it will be before my number comes up? :dunno:  Problem is, it's not going to get any better.
I agree with doing away with the points system.  Do it like ID with straight up draws.  OR and AZ aren't even worth applying for now because the odds are so stacked against someone who hasn't already been doing it that it's just a waste of money.  Montana and Wyoming are in a different category because they have more game than they do hunters, they get to play by different rules.  Points only work well if you can "clean out" the max point pool by a significant number every year.
Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes.  That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
