I use 10.  Certainly going to be a personal preference.

If you do a lot of dedicated open country hunts then you probably have or will eventually want a high powered spotting scope or bins (i.e., 15x56, etc) anyway.

I personally have Nikon EDG 10x32. They have the FOV of most 42mm objective bins out there but even still I can see how they would feel a bait more steady if they were 8x. I just couldn't pass 'em up for $600.

I have a pair of the Zen Ray 9x36 Zen Ed2 and there top notch. I would recommend Zen Ray binoculars.

Ive always been kinda a cheap *censored* when it came to optics but aftet looking at a buddies nice binos and my cheaper 100$ per i think im putting a new set on my X-MAS list.

I would get 10x42's. My old pair was 8x42 and that's why I bought new 10x Vortex vipers. Monarchs are good for the money.
